Andina draws inspiration from the native culinary traditions of Peru, as well as from the contemporary cooking by some of Peru's leading chefs. Owner Doris Rodriguez de Platt, collaborates with Andina's kitchen team to develop a menu that celebrates her family's Andean roots, interweaving the ideas and techniques of both Criollo and Novo-Andean cuisines. The kitchen sources native and local ingredients to create dishes at once traditionally rooted and personally inspired. Founded in 2003, Andina emerged as one of the region's leading Peruvian restaurants and continues to generate wide appeal within the food communities in and around Portland, and much further afield.
Had lunch on 11/4/09 at Andina. Excellent food, a bit pricey. The waiter, unfortunately, was the most ungracious server I've ever encountered. Seemed to resent waiting on us. No 'Thank you', no 'You're welcome', no 'How is everything?', nothing. Barely condescended to answer questions about various dishes. Had to get other servers to refill water glasses, etc. Spoiled the meal for all four of us. At those prices, they need to train their staff in common courtesy, at least. Won't go back again.
I have frequented Andina for at least 3 years and the consistency of food and service continues to impress me. It's no wonder to me why it's always rated one of the top restaurants in Portland. Go to the Pearl on first Thursday for the art and then meander over to Andina. Portlanders, out-of-towners and anyone with a decent palate is bound to be excited by what Andina has to offer. I'm sure they have their share of off-nights, but in over 3 years, I have remarkably not been there for one.
Make no mistake, Andina is NOT a Spanish restaurant. It is Peruvian, which is completely different. Just because the country of origin speaks Spanish does not mean they serve Spanish-style food. They serve Peruvian-style food.
This place simply sucked. The interior was nice as the service was pretty good but it was all down hill from there. How can you give chicken nuggets a prententious name and charge fivteen bucks for six of them smaller than my thumb? Oysters on the half shell should have been called oyster embryos. Another fiveen or twenty bucks for six of the smallest oysters in captivity. A few asparagas and some kind of foo foo rice dish with salsa/chutny and we were well over a hundred bucks. Hey don't get me wrong though. This is a great place to take clients if you want to impress them with how much you are willing to spend on precious little. Wading through the menu of exaustive exotic entrees was painful as was the pretentiousness of this clip joint.
The food is divine and unusual, we loved it although it is spendy in my book, dinner and dessert was over 100, and that did not include any alcoholic beverages. I would highly recommend it for something different!
