Located in the famous Powell's City Of Books , this is the third retail outlet of the famous specialty coffee roaster 'World Cup Coffee & Tea'. Powell's is already known world wide for its rich collection of books and the coffee is definitely one of the things that keeps customers coming back for more. This specialty coffee store only adds to the cozy and comfortable vibe of Powell's.
So this, favorite bookstore of mine, is the biggest bookstore in the US. In fact they have maps to help customers find they're way around the four-floored store.
They sell both new and used books so you can find practically anything however old and if you don't see what you want, they can probably get it for you. If you have a few hundred dollars or so to spend there's also the Rare Bookroom to check out where you can find very rare books every subject -- but remember they $cost$ because of rarity.
A bargain tip: There have been many times when I went to the store with only a small amount of money. I happen upon a book I just HAVE to have but I don't have enough cash for it. BUT . . . I look through every copy to see if there is one that's cheaper (used) and, more often then not, I find one and score the book.
Lastly, there's also a coffee shop inside the store where you can go, grab a coffee and munchies, sit, and just read to your hearts content.
Awesome place to check out if you're in Portland and love reading.
Powell's has books --- and lots of 'em. That's the point.
They also have fun, random items... like Einstein action figures, funky calendars, and witty nalgene water bottles emblazoned with notable characters from various fields - get your RDA of philosophy with Nietzsche or of physics with Newton.
If the downtown Powell's doesn't have the book you're looking for, odds are one of their warehouses does. Just ask --- or look it up for yourself at one of the many self-serve computer stations.
This is one of the coolest places in Portland. Oh yeah! They have basically all the books that you need. It's the biggest private book store in the US. The store is a huge building that take over a street block downtown Portland. Amaing place
Defenitly like a little city. I can spend days in this place. Once I was confortable with my sexuality I came here and read up on other people's expeirences of being gay. Such an important place in my life.
Was Powell's the first of the mega-bookstores to put a cafe inside? Perhaps. But the atmosphere today is so much nicer than a B & N or Borders. No mass chain-store feel here; just miles of luscious books in a unique, comfortable setting. The selection of used books is outstanding, and the store is kid- and student-friendly. When I advise visitors to Portland on what to see, I mention Powell's first.
Powell's is my favorite bookstore. It doesn't matter what you are looking for they will have it or can get it. Their selection is huge. The downtown store is warehouse size bookstore with multiple floors and color coded rooms so you can find what you are looking for. There are information desks in each room if you are having any trouble locating your book. The people there are very friendly and more than happy to help. They sell new and used books so you are bound to find something in your budget. They also have a Beaverton location that is a fairly good size and they can transfer the books for you if you are not able to commute to the other location.
For the price of one new book you can usually pickup anywhere from 2 - 5 used books at their great prices. I don't think I've ever been to Powell's and couldn't find what I am looking for. If you have a family member or friend that loves books this is the perfect place to get them a gift certificate to. Please warn them that they will be in there from open to close just looking at all that Powell's has to offer.
If you just want to relax with a good book they also have a coffee shop attached to the store where you are welcome to sit and read all day.
A book lover's PARADISE!!!!!!
