With its combination of atmosphere, food and downtown location, Mandarin Cove has consistently been rated one of the city's finest Chinese restaurants. The decor features Chinese good luck colors of red and pink. Servers in tuxedos provide friendly, professional service and make recommendations from the extensive menu. You will find everything from Kung-Pao Chicken to specialties like Mandarin Shrimp, along with a full bar. Lunch specials are available throughout the week. You can also enjoy Happy Hour special discount rates and unlimited appetizers here. Worth a shot!
When in Portland I have eaten at this restaurant on several occasions. I enjoy the Mu Shu Pork and the House Chow Mein. But recently I tried the Peking Duck. It is getting hard to find Peking Duck any more.
I could not believe what they tried to pass off as Peking Duck. They brought out a deep fried duck that was chopped in pieces. The skin was not seperated from the meat as is supposed to the tradition. It was not crispy and very salty.
I complained that this was not Peking Duck. The hostess asked me how many times I had been to China? I told her never and she replied how do you know how Peking Duck is supposed to be prepared.
I told her I had eaten Peking Duck in Los Angeles and San Francisco China Town's and I was very familiar on the preperation.
I won't go back.
This place has the best lunch special around... the only problem is that you have to get it to go. Great for downtown employees, not so great for downtown daytrippers. Cheap, delicious, and plentiful. Update: I had dinner here again recently and everything was fabulous - service, food, atmosphere. Love it. Go!
I am usually very skeptical of hotel food establishment. Especially ones that tote foreign cuisine.
However, Mandarin Cove has won my approval hands down. Even though the place looks like a hotel restaurant (lacking in Asian Appeal) the food is fantastic and the service is especially efficient and friendly. Great location if you work in the bizz section of downtown PDX.
