Higgins Restaurant & Bar

Description

This downtown restaurant is known for its local cuisine; all the ingredients are harvested here in Oregon. The small, split-level setup is cozy, but it can get noisy. Northwest seafood, local mushrooms and other veggies make up an array of uniquely Oregon dishes. The razor clams and salmon are considered specialties. The pastrami sandwich is a good choice for lunch. This restaurant also claims to have the largest wine and beer list in the city, but you cannot get a Budweiser.

It was pretty good but I thought the wait was a little long. Once we got or order it was fine but we never saw the waitress again until the check. i gave her a tip that she should be around more and maybe a little faster with the order. If you go there I hope your not in her section.

After hearing so much about this restaurant, I was disappointed with the food I had for lunch. The house-made pastrami was dried out and flavorless, and for some reason accompanied by rather sharp, crumbled cheddar cheese. Pastrami and CHEESE? Please. A rhubarb tart was OK, but nothing exceptional. I would not bother going here again. Could probably have had just as good a lunch over at the art museum and definitely done better at the Heathman Hotel, two blocks down the street.

Perfect

Higgins is everything we want in fine dining--fresh, local, perfectly prepared and not too pretentious.

My favorite restaurant in Portland when I have the money to splurge. The service is excellent and not pretentious. The food is fresh and the dishes are creative. I love Higgins!

An unpleasant surprise. For the life of me, I can't imagine why the room was full or why this establishment has such a good reputation. The food was poor to mediocre. The prices were high, but to be fair, I wouldn't return no matter what the price.

Sloppy, overpriced, uninventive fare which boasts local ingredients served in a traditional setting. The menu is stale, the servers unknowledgeable about the food they're serving, and the prices exorbitant. There are so many better choices in the city.

We had a most disappointing dinner at Higgins recently. While the menu was well conceived with interesting choices, the execution was horrible. Our ribeye steak was chewy and of mediocre quality. The accompanying vegetable (turnips) were so hard as to be inedible. The potatoes were overly salted and also basically inedible. We were comped for the meal, so they did the right thing. But this is inexcusible. We will not be returning.

On business trips from LA, I always eat here, especially in the wonderful bar in the back. The salmon with polenta is phenomenal; the flat-iron steak superb. Great drinks. Service just right. I feel right at home here, and wish we had something like it in Santa Monica.

We had a so-so dinner here. The food was good but not great. We were quite disappointed. My salmon was served with spatzel and raspberry sauce and was a bit dry but had nice flavor. The atmosphere was a bit staid and the decor was tired. It was Friday night but the restaurant was not full. Our server was very nice and professional but we would not go back as the overall dining experience was not lively and the food was not fabulous.

What a disappointing restaurant. I kind of like old buildings, but this restaurant probably hasn't spent any money at all to keep up its building. The woodwork needs refinishing and cleaning, especially by the windows. My hangar steak had no flavor. My wife's salmon had to be returned it was so dry. New one brought out was overseasoned. Service was good. Very overrated. Bar area seemed nice but not the main restaurant.
