I started going to Tacho's fifteen years ago, as a kid, and I still go here, although now I spend most of my time in the cantina. The food is high quality and the service is fast. The drinks are also very good--especially the cazuela and the blackberry margarita. Everything is reasonably priced and if you're not a big eater, they offer small combinations. It's very low-key, mostly local regulars and college kids using it as a pre-func. They have karaoke on the weekends and a video poker room.
I was born and raised in Portland (35 years) and moved to Florida 8 years ago. I go back to visit a couple of times each year. And my closest circle of friends and I always go out for karaoke while I'm in town. After several years of trying this place and that place, the vote for the best overall experience definately goes to Tacho's Mexican Restaurant.
The feature that is the most valued to us is that you get to sing several times a night. And that's why you're there, right? There are so many other places where you're lucky if you get to sing 2-3 times a night!
Another feature is the huge song choice list. The books are either by artist or song title, and are a good four inches thick! And there are plenty to go around.
Of course, as important as these two features are, they wouldn't be worth much if the others that we value were poor. That's why this is our top choice of where to go for karaoke in Portland. The food is good, plentiful, and inexpensive and the service is quick to get it to you. And if you're looking to meet other people who share your love of singing, this is a great place to do it. The crowd is always diverse, fun loving, and friendly.
So get out there and have a BLAST!
You get free food on your birthday, show your I.D. and it's all good. There is a wonderful, laid-back atmosphere and if you like excellent mexican cuisine at great values, you're going to want to visit Tacho's.
No happy hour food here. Only lower prices on some drinks. This used to be our favorite Mexican food. Something has changed within the past 2 years. Smaller portions of everything. Even chips and salsa. The quality is not as good either. They do have great Karaoke in the bar Thursday through Saturday.
The menu has great variety, the food is hot and tasty, and there's plenty of it. There's always a special, but even the regular prices are very reasonable. It's the only place my wife will eat the Spanish rice, or my kid the refried beans. I favor the mole' chicken. Fun on birthdays!
