Wailana Coffee House
Every city has a Wailana Coffee House - it's been around forever and has become an institution. Located just across the street from the Hilton Hawaiian Village at the entrance to Waikiki, it does a brisk 24-hour business. Most folks say the breakfasts are the main draw here; the pancakes, waffles, and egg dishes are available all day and night. Try the Portugese sweetbread dipped in egg batter. The salads are also tasty, and the dinner specials offer great value.
We've been there three times. I will not go back again. I saw (what I consider) health violations done by a manager who was walking around and assisting during a busy weekend morning. He handled money and then, without washing, served customers drinks with unwashed hands. I saw him drop silverware and then pick it up and put it back on the table. I saw him pick out silverware to set a table and handle the wrong ends after busing other tables, handling money and dirty dishes. Wipe cloths should be kept in a mild bleach solution after each use. I saw his wiping cloths just laying on top of the server station without rinsing them or putting them in solution. If the manager does not know the simple rules of sanitation, I worry about the back kitchen. I think the waitresses are wonderful, though, and give them big kudos for handling the amount of people coming and going. The food was fairly good tasting and the portions were good. The floors were filthy with dust and old food in the corners and on the well worn carpet. They have Eggs Benedict to die for. We're off to find another good breakfast place.
The people are rude and the price/selection is not that great.
I stood at the 'wait to be seated sign' for 5 minutes while employees at the cash register, 5 feet away, just stood there and talked and ignored me. Finally someone told me to grab a seat. The server was also very unfriendly.
I will definitely not go there again.
Heres a little tid bit. Go to Wailana Coffee House bar on Thursday night. The bar is just to the right as you walk in the coffe shop.
I have never seen such a wonderful group of people in my life. Ron, the piano player sets the mood for one enjoyable evening. This little group has been meeting for years and invite on-lookers with open hearts, smiles, and enchanting stories. I sang, I held hands, I exchanged my own stories. I was invited back, and I pray I can return as asked. I can not explain the experience in words, but eurge anyone who can visit and sit a evening, to do so. My evening there was better than anything I had ever expected. I fell in love with the 79 year old spectacular woman who sang french show tunes like an angle. Or the jokes, about clapping. Everyone was majic. I'm telling you, visit, take notes, these people have it right. I will not miss anything more than my new friends there. Thanks for having me.

Wailana Coffe House is the best place near Waikiki Beach to eat a hearty, American and/or Hawaiian breakfast. Great food, great, coffee, and quick, friendly service from cheery, native Hawaiian waitresses, this is a place I returned to again and again during my stay. A friend recommended it, and she wasn't wrong. Try the French toast, topped with coconut syrup! And on top of the wonderful food, it is located within a short walk of Waikiki Beach and is probably one of the cleanest eateries in town (and clean restrooms, too!) Don't miss it!!
Someone recommended this place for breakfast. I had some time for dinner and decided to stop by. Nothing fancy, simple dishes, mediocre quality, salad bar unsatisfying. Service kept pushing the salad bar during dinner. Wouldn't recommend this restaurant with all the other numerous places in Waikiki.
