Volcano's Lava Rock Cafe
When a burger and a milkshake is preferable to fusion cuisine and cocktails, stop by this down-home deli. Billed as the place where the locals eat, it's a friendly, no-frills diner in Volcano Village. Menu items include stir-fries, burgers, sweet-bread french toast and super-gooey chocolate cake. The macadamia nut cookies are the toast of the town. This place offers live entertainment on weekend nights and internet access all the time.
I liked it and I thought the food was good. There's definately nothing special about it. Price is about average, I fed a family of five for 75.00 dollars US. About what I spend anywhere else on dinner for all five of us. It was clean, and I'll probably eat there again tomorrow.
In 2009 Volcano's Lava Rock Cafe went through a huge renovation inside and partially outside. There are more tables which are clean and comforable and the bathrooms are cleaner. If you want better service try going between the breakfast and lunch or lunch and dinner rushes. This place gets very busy with limited but friendly staff. The menu is quite diverse for a cafe. There are dinner specials every night. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner and some absolutly addicting deserts like the pumpkin crunch, lilikoi cheesecake and the elusive haupia cake (a favorite of ours they seem to run out of a lot). They do not close between meals like some Hilo restaurants. Locals like it because they serve good food at a good price and the atmosphere is friendly.
This place (which I would rate only very loosely as a restaurant) sports badly cooked food, slow and surly service should be a must miss in everybody's book. I am a local and have given them several chances to prove themselves. I have been disappointed every time without fail. I can only imagine how a bad experience there would color someones vacation. However if you enjoy charred burgers, overcooked fish, wilted lettuce that was left under the heat lamp, cold food that is supposed to be hot, seeing the head cook scratch his head and the waitress wipe her nose on her hand (and both going straight back to work) - hey this is your place -- enjoy! I have eaten better food from street vendors....
