Mama's Fish House
Mama's Fish House is actually a converted beach house in a coconut grove on a secluded white sand beach. Inside, hinged windows open to let in the trade winds and Polynesian artifacts and original oil paintings decorate tropical hardwood walls. The rooms are filled with spectacular flower arrangements and tapa print cloths cover the tables. Outdoor dining is equally exciting, and everyone enjoys watching the windsurfers performing offshore.
Mama's Fish House is my all-time restaurant. The fish is always fresh and the food is prepared perfectly. Every time I visit Mama's the wait help always makes me feel like I am coming home. I have never felt rushed through my meal whether at Lunch or Dinner.
This is our second time eating at Mama's and again we were not disappointed! This is my favorite restaurant of all time! We started with two appetizers. Mama's Macadamia Nut Crusted Crab cakes (two) and the Shrimp Won Tons. The crab cakes were fantastic and the dipping sauce was wonderful. I am not a fan of shrimp so I have no real critique for this. I had a very filling Hana Mahi mahi meal for lunch. It included a generous piece of fish, with a coconut milk dipping sauce, Kahlua Pork (this was the best), fried banana, star fruit, a small slice of sweet potato, and fresh poi.
This is a restaurant you don't want to miss.
My husband and I went to Maui on our honeymoon. We had read reviews about Mam's Fish House. I envisioned a shack out on the beach.
Hands down, this place has the best location on the island. It has a view of the North Shore where you can watch huge world class parasailing and surfing waves roar in. The beach is shaded by palm trees. There is a large tidal pool on the edge of the beach.
The staff was efficient. The food was delicious. We ordered the tender cheeks as an appetizer. It was deep fried but succulent. The stuffed mahi mahi was cooked to perfection and crab/shrimp stuffing was delicious.
The mixed drinks were some of the best we've ever had. The Planters' Punch is fruity and delicate. The drinks were not watered down.
The prices were high. You're paying for the view, not the food. I wouldn't recommend it for a family dinner.
service was terrible..food was ok but he price was not ..$16 bucks for a marg..we were rushed in and out and and payed way to much for a view ..next time we will go else where this was a huge disapointment...
Mamas Fish House was at a beatiful location, if we would have only just enjoyed the views, vs. ordering lunch. The waitress was great at making the food sound like it would be good, she encouraged us to start with a fish cheek appetizer, which sounded great. The fish cheek turned out to be a deep fried.. yuk… fish skull. We never did find the tender cheeks, however the sauce was great, just a bottled sauce. wow how creative. We only ordered one meal as it sounded large and we did not want to be over full for swimming. The meal arrived wrapped up a leaf very nice, however once we opened it there was about 3 pieces of pork, and a few pieces of fish I would say 2 oz. could be an over exaggeration. So if you are hungry don’t go there, unless you are prepared to spend a lot of money for basically an over priced chef, who should learn about portions. So, Mama you will never see us there and I will do my best to tell all future travelers about your place.. Nice beach..
I am pretty disappointed. I do not mind spending high price for great food. But the food here was just overpriced for the average quality food that you can find in Maui at lower price. Service was below average for sure. And, we waited long to be seated, waited longer, at least half an hour, from the time we finished appetizer until the main dish came. The whole time, my ice tea was empty until I finally asked for the refill when the main dish was served. (not only our table, I thought other table were done for the main dish, but they were waiting for the main dish as we were.) Collection of the check $ was the fastest of all of the restaurants we went. It was my second time to Maui, went to several pricy restaurants, I have never written any review for any other restaurants ever, but this one, I had to warn others. Only satisfaction is the view. But again, you can get the great view at restaurants in Wailea or Kaanapali at lower price with better food, or same price with better food and great service.
The location is great. The food portions are big, but so are the prices. Other than the Fish being the freshest, there is nothing special about the menu.
This restaurant is very busy. Even with reservations, you will have to wait at the bar prior to being seated. You WILL feel very rushed throughout the entire meal.
Sorry, I just don't get what the big deal is with this place. We'd heard about it from the moment we arrived on Maui, so we made reservations. I'm all about sitting down for a 5 star meal and paying out the nose for it from time to time, but this just wasn't worth it. Our appetizer could have been from a fast food restaurant...seriously. The entree's I have to admit were excellent, but that was about all I can say about this place. Our service was average at best. Our food took an hour from the time it was ordered (I had a medium rare filet) and it wasn't busy in there. My wife and I left looking at each other wondering why we drove all the way from Lahaina to spend a couple hundred dollars on a forgettable experience.
This place is in a class of its own... the best place to eat on the North Shore without a doubt, especially if money is no object.... lol. Excellent location ambience and service. The food will amaze you, and you will want to come back again.
The view is gorgeous. The food was good. The price was very expensive for the portion you get. This was a one time experience but I would not go back again. There's many more restaurant that are just as good but not have to drive so far.
