Description

Located about 30 minutes from Waikiki Beach, this small intimate bistro serves stylish, fresh, and flavorful Japanese dishes, and is a favorite of the area's bedroom community residents. The service is subdued although attentive and the setting is filled with warm colors in a Japanese decor. Booth and table seating are the mainstays and advance reservations are essential at this tiny spot, although the parking is ample and readily available. Sushi is one of the better choices and the teishoku is definitely some of the best in the area. - Lottie Tagupa

Kunio Restaurant
By shawn, 5/16/07
sorry not a big fan of anything from the ocean, but i was happy to reel in a chicken katsu plate. it wasnt the best ive tasted but it was certainly the most expensive. one problem with this place is the tables are too close together. its like you're all one big party. i was lucky enough to be sitting next to 2 girls who wouldnt stop talking. i should have asked if i could side order a wall or something.

Difficult to get in
By Tricia, 5/9/07
Their food is good, the restaurant is very popular with very little space. Waits are long with no seating area and they do not take reservations, even for large parties. They have a party room, but will not accept reservations for it. Good food, but very difficult to get in without a very long wait.

Traditional Fusion
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/12/06
Just came back from a New York, Las Vegas, LA, San Deigo trip. First thing I did was to come and have a real sushi meal at Kunio. I don't know when this trendy fusion stuff came from but those so-called creativity ain't sushi. To me, nothing beats an order of prime cut ahi on sushi rice that's seasoned just right. If you crave real sushi, this is the place.

Not the greatest sushi, but better than the rest.
By Kailua Girl, 1/18/06
I have been to Kunio's several times and keep going because I honestly haven't found a better place. I think the sushi is above average if you compare to Ghenki, but below average when comparing to sushi restaurants from major cities in the mainland. It is fresh...but anyone can slap a peice of fish and rice together. I am looking for something more creative and Kunio's is still on the beginners level compared to other sushi bars I've encountered. Not to mention, while dining I noticed that a majority of people don't eat sushi there...mainly tempura ship or stir frys, which I found interesting. The tempura was good and the sushi is decent, but I was hoping for something more. The california volcano roll is worth a try.

Pretty good
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/15/05
I recently moved to Hawaii and heard all the hype about how great sushi is here...and to be honest, all the restaurants I've been to have been mediocore and over rated, at best. Coming from Chicago, New York and D.C., I was pretty disappointed. I've been to Kunio's twice and this will probably be the only sushi restaurant I will go to while I'm here. The food is great. Don't get tempted by Genki Sushi (ghetto sushi) down the corner, the wait for Kunio's is worth it. Any of the specials are recommended, including their special rolls. Fantastic.

Wonderful
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/5/05
My family and I visited this restaurant a couple months ago, but only now I'm writing a review about it. Great place, good food. It get's busy during evening times, so make reservations or get there early. If not, the wait is a little bit long. If you can last the wait, the food inside is a prize. The price of the food is alright, but for someone under my budget, it's a bit of an eye opener. I would recommend this place to those that LOVE to eat Japanese food. The meal I had was the miso butterfish, which was really delicious. They cooked everything just right. BIG thumbs up!

Going Back!
By Randy, 9/30/05
This place is very good, when you can get in! And the reason for that is the food is first rate and a good value. If you want to try this place for yourself, go early, otherwise you'll be in line along time, but worth the wait for sure

Worth The Wait!
By Miriam, 9/6/05
Small restaurant with a friendly staff. Expect to wait for a table or find a seat at the sushi bar. Generous portions for the price.
