Uncle Billy's Kona Bay Hotel
Centrally located and owned by a local family, this place is great for your family. Rooms are comfortable and attractive. Many of them feature ocean views. This hotel and its sister property are the only two Hawaiian-owned hotels on the island. The staff is primarily members of Uncle Billy's family, and they do their utmost to extend genuine Aloha spirit to every guest. It is situated in Downtown Kona/Kailua, within easy walking distance of the beach, shops, restaurants and a score of activities.
Warm Breezes, towering palms, Polynesian motif, the occasional breaking wave, sounds of people enjoying this little village, and a true Hawaiian experience when you check in via their open air lobby! What's not to like?
The staff is friendly and helpful. They smile alot and say Aloha. I like that. They connect with you. I like that too. My senses are delightfully stroked with each of my visits. I love Hawaii and I love spending time there.
The room? A mix of warm colors and fun textures. It looks to be in transition with some of the older room fixtures being systematically updated. I
I always stay at Uncle Billy's. You're in Hawai'i for gosh sakes. What are you going to do, stay in your room. You might as well vacation in downtown Podunk Junction. I spend about 5-6 hrs. a day in the room. And during that time I'm sleeping. The price is right, the location is perfect.
That the place is a bit run down was expected after reading other reviews. An unpleasant surprise was a stench of sweat and urine, barely covered by some heavily scented cleaning agent. Using the A/C adds a cloud of mold. A homeless who stole a key and tried to break into the room on two consecutive evenings added to the experience.
Recommendation: Good value if you want to rough it and get it for under fifty dollars a night. Otherwise run, don't walk.
Not for the faint of heart when it comes to hotels, that is for sure. You should be a little more adventurous if you consider this place! Our room was clean, at least. No bugs. Didn't see one. If you are looking for a place to stay for a couple of nights, somewhere you can shower, change and sleep it will do. But not for a long stay. Not the kind of room you can really chill in. There are a lot of working men there with their families on the weekend and they were cool. If you're students looking for a cheap room for Spring Break it will do. Or, if you just need a night or two it's adequate. Our bathroom was clean with a new tub & shower head. But it has public style toilets. King sized bed worked & was comfy. It's a really cool, retro style that they should seriously consider rennovating. It has great potential. I, however, wouldn't stay there again unless it had an overhaul type rennovation.
The location is prime. The rooms are old and in need of renovation but if you do not need the Hilton, it will certainly do. Staff was very helpful. The free breakfast is a buffet that almost never changes and is boring, but it's included with the price and if you like fresh fruit, eggs and pancakes, oatmeal, ham, french toast etc. you will do fine.
