Description

It is easy to get decent Japanese food on the islands, but if you want Kauai's best, this is the place to go. Locals and tourists in the know agree that the tempura, Teppan yaki and pupus or appetizers here are the very best. As for the sashimi and sushi, they melt in your mouth. The authentic Asian decor is appealing and serene, with a choice of table or tatami seating. This family-owned business has been an island favorite for two generations.

My family has been coming to Kauai for 40 years, in the day when CoCo Palms was in it's prime. At the cocktail parties every night at CoCo Palms, among other appetizers were Kintaro's hand made wontons. I was little then and couldn't stand there forever to eat them, me hovering at the appetizer table, wouldn't be polite you know, but eat them I did. Absolutely delicious. Incredible, nothing you can make yourself and Kintaro's have their own wonton factory right there on Kauai. I missed those wontons so much that as an adult I called from Portland, Oregon some years ago and asked if I could buy some. They were more than happy to help me and I would have several cases sent to me packed in dry ice. My family goes nuts, our friends request more and sometimes that is our dinner alone. I have eaten at this restaurant many, many times and the food is great, BUT you can't find other wontons like these ANYWHERE. Thank you so much Kintaros, for a wonderful wonton and for a little girl to keep her wonderful memories of an enchanted place.

This place sucks! the sushi is less than average and if your a tourist they will treat you like crap. Its a locals only spot and they will let you know that as soon as you walk in. We sat at the sushi bar and the wannabe sushi chef was rude and made terrible rolls. Skip this place and eat at Mcdonalds its better food.

Fantastic sushi - come early
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/5/09
Kintaro's is so popular you have to get there 1/2 hour ahead of opening to stand in line- if you want to eat at the sushi bar. It has the most fantastic sushi on the east side. Tables with grills in the center are fun for a group of 6 to share.

Come here for the sushi
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/5/09
This establishment is known for their outstanding sushi. Their must have is the Hanalei roll. They also offer a large teppan yaki section where you sit and watch your food being prepared by a skilled chef.

We've been to quite a few Japanese Steakhouses before and this is by far the freshest food we've had at any of them. The problem was the service, however. It took 10 min's to get a server, about 40 min's to get our food, my drink was never refilled, we were never checked on, I gave my credit card to the server who disappeared for 10 mins and when I asked about it, he asked if I was "in a hurry." Just be prepared for the lack of service.

This is one of the best restaurants on the island...if you're a local. We love you tourists, you keep our island economy healthy. BUT - stay away from this one. Leave it to us and you can have all the rest. Besides, you wouldn't like it anyway. Its not the mainland or Oahu. Thanks but no thanks. This ones ours. SHAKA!!!

I love it. As for the comment made on the 50th anniversary party of nine. Make sure the entire group is accounted for otherwise they won't seat you. It is a popular spot for locals. It seems mondays would be there slower night of the week. They are closed on Sundays. Look at it this way Its like being a Hilton Diamond member with no wait. Membership has its priviledges. Ha Ha. locals rule born and raised..........

Mahalo!!!!

I was recently in Kapaa (12/7-12/17/08) and was told that this place was the best around, well we tried it and WAS NOT disappointed! The food and service was great!! The hostess was very sweet and made us feel like we had know each other for years! Angel, the sushi chef works his butt off and remembers what you like and what you usually order..unreal considering this place is ALWAYS hopping. Will always remember Kintaros, HIGHLY recommended!!!!!!!!!!!!
