It is easy to get decent Japanese food on the islands, but if you want Kauai's best, this is the place to go. Locals and tourists in the know agree that the tempura, Teppan yaki and pupus or appetizers here are the very best. As for the sashimi and sushi, they melt in your mouth. The authentic Asian decor is appealing and serene, with a choice of table or tatami seating. This family-owned business has been an island favorite for two generations.
The wait was a little long, but sit at the bar and have some appetizers.
We ate Teppan style, which is Benihana style, with the chef cooking for you at the table. Had the filet mignon and some lobster tail, it was excellent. The chef is very good. As well as the meat, the vegetables and bean sprouts were great.
They do also a regular sit down with sushi and other stuff.
This is not your typical sushi restaurant its got all the island flavor and so much more. we went there and sure the staff is a little slow and maybe they get sick of tourist, but the food is soooo good it more than makes up for it. Also we realized that the guy who served us is actaully the OWNER I mean thats pretty unreal and if he is there every night it has got to make a difference. overall we had fun met some local surfers who told us about a secret spot and just had an all around good time.
This restaurant came highly recommended
and the ahi dinner didn't disappoint. The
restaurant hostess and waiters are not
very friendly but our chef was and gave
a great performance.
I love this place but you definately need
a reservation or be prepared for a long
wait. Dinner about 25.00
I don't even like sushi for the most part but this place had great food. They have a nice selection of filet mignon, Alaskan king crab legs (which we had) and a few other items for those that aren't into sushi (like myself). We did try the Super Doop rolls which were pretty tasty.
The staff, like most in Kapa'a, isn't particularly friendly, but for two people, just sit at the bar and eat. The sushi is excellent and the combo-meals are great. A little expensive but the food is really good.
I visited Kauai in July 2005 and heard that Kintaro was a restaurant similiar to Beni Hana. Kintaro supposodely had: cooking right in front of you, fun and interesting chefs, and amazing FRESH food; however, when we got to Kintaro we were rudely awakened to quite a different environment. Although we had made reservations a week ahead for the specific tables with the cooking in front of you, the hostess first ignored us and then mysteriously lost our reservation. We then had to wait for 1 1/2 hours with no compensation. The waitresses and hostesses were extremely rude... and the food wasn't anything special and didn't taste fresh at all. The entire experience was HORRIBLE and don't expect anything when going there.
I visited Kauai in Aug 2004. We ate at Kintaro's one night and it was the best food I have ever had anywhere. I was in a group of 5 people who all ordered something different and all the food was fabulous. We ate Benihana-style which I would recommend if it is something you have never experienced. Do call and make reservations ahead of time as this is a popular restaurant. All of my future visits to Kauai will always include at least one meal at Kintaro.
