I live up the street and this is one of those places that I am always happy to go to. If I am planning a mellow beach day, I like to have the fresh fruit platter for a late breakfast/early lunch. I'll then spend spend some time at the beach and get some exercise. When I'm craving shade and something cool to drink, the bar becomes my refuge. Hula Grill has a great list of specialty cocktails...most with fresh juice. Whether you opt for alcohol or not, there are tons of thirst quenching options. Really good, plain ice tea too. For lunch the fish sandwich and any of their salads are what I love. Or, if I am with friends, splitting a bunch of pupus and maybe a fish taco always suits me too. They have great pizzas that are cooked in a wood burning over filed with kiave (like mequite). My favorite is the goat cheese pizza. But at happy hour they offer more pizzas and they are only $5. My favorite of those is the short rib pizza with asparagus tips and blue cheese.
Oh, I almost forgot. There is live music almost the entire time they are open. There are four different sets played from 11:30 am to 9:30pm. During the 6-9:30 set there is also a hula performance about half way through. Seeing the Aunties sway is always so nice. They do it so well!
If I am in for dinner, I again sit in the casual area known as the Barefoot Bar. There you can enjoy the less expensive options and also get some things from the dining room menu if you ask nicely! Doing the combo is the best. I am all over the board in terms of ordering. Mostly I tend to order lots of pupus, then share a salad and share and entree, or order more and enjoy it later. Kona Cofee cheesecake is my favorite dessert, but sometimes the chocolate martini or chip shot go down just as well.
I like it here so much because it is lovely, the staff is friendly, funny, and entertaining and the food is consistently good.
