Hula Grill - Kaanapali

Description

On the water's edge on Kaanapali Beach, Hula Grill offers a stunning view of the Pacific and of the islands of Lanai and Molokai that has to be seen to be believed. From this distinctly Hawaiian vantage point, you are invited to join us as we celebrate the hospitality, culture and cuisine of the islands. Dinner is served in our open-air dining room where you can relax in the ambiance of a plantation era beach house while enjoying renown chef Peter Merriman's Hawaii regional seafood that isn't only a favorite of vacationers, but locals, too. Hawaiian fresh fish and locally grown produce are combined to create amazing menu offerings that are as colorful as they are flavorful. Fiery sunsets are served up daily along with live Hawaiian entertainment. Our Barefoot Bar offers a more casual menu serving both lunch and dinner under authentic thatch roof umbrellas and a sand floor where you can sink your toes in. The Barefoot Bar is seated on a walk-in basis only.

I live up the street and this is one of those places that I am always happy to go to. If I am planning a mellow beach day, I like to have the fresh fruit platter for a late breakfast/early lunch. I'll then spend spend some time at the beach and get some exercise. When I'm craving shade and something cool to drink, the bar becomes my refuge. Hula Grill has a great list of specialty cocktails...most with fresh juice. Whether you opt for alcohol or not, there are tons of thirst quenching options. Really good, plain ice tea too. For lunch the fish sandwich and any of their salads are what I love. Or, if I am with friends, splitting a bunch of pupus and maybe a fish taco always suits me too. They have great pizzas that are cooked in a wood burning over filed with kiave (like mequite). My favorite is the goat cheese pizza. But at happy hour they offer more pizzas and they are only $5. My favorite of those is the short rib pizza with asparagus tips and blue cheese. Oh, I almost forgot. There is live music almost the entire time they are open. There are four different sets played from 11:30 am to 9:30pm. During the 6-9:30 set there is also a hula performance about half way through. Seeing the Aunties sway is always so nice. They do it so well! If I am in for dinner, I again sit in the casual area known as the Barefoot Bar. There you can enjoy the less expensive options and also get some things from the dining room menu if you ask nicely! Doing the combo is the best. I am all over the board in terms of ordering. Mostly I tend to order lots of pupus, then share a salad and share and entree, or order more and enjoy it later. Kona Cofee cheesecake is my favorite dessert, but sometimes the chocolate martini or chip shot go down just as well. I like it here so much because it is lovely, the staff is friendly, funny, and entertaining and the food is consistently good.

I researched all the options near Westin and decided to go here for lunch. We got there around noon and waited 5 minutes to be seated. It definitely got busy when we were done and there was a long line. We ordered the fish ceviche. It was excellent. We got the crab wonton which came with hot mustard as dip. Again, excelllent. We also got the fish and chips. I was hesitant at first bec it's hard to find really good fish and chips outside of London. It did not disappoint us. The fish was lightly battered, just enough to make the outside crispy. The fish was nice and moist, fresh too. The french fries was a small portion but didn't mind it considering I got chips with the ceviche and the wonton. I got the mai tai and it is one of best I've had in Maui. For dessert, we got the upside down pineapple cake. We asked for the caramel rum sauce to be on the side to not overpower the rest, and it was absolutely to die for. Our server was very attentive and friendly. We will definitely recommend it to everyone, and we'll be coming back for sure.

We read all of these positive reviews and headed to Hula Grill for our first meal on Maui. SUCH a disappointment! Our food was cold including the hot sandwich we ordered and everyones fries, which we all know how gross fries are cold. I got a fish taco with store bought tortilla chips as my side. That doesn't spell quality in my book. You can't see the beach from the restaurant but you ARE sitting in sand. So it still feels beachy. Ambiance is nice, but the food is not worth the price.

Went here for lunch while shopping at Whalers Village. Good Mai Tais, great sandwiches and of course, a great ocean view.

absolutely delicious. Starting with the bread sticks and fish sauce with garlic and chili. The ceviche was amazing. Beware, if you don’t like to try new thing and not a big fan of Asian cuisine, you probably won’t be thrilled by Hula Grill.

I miss the Hula Grill

I don't eat seafood, but their fish & chips with the lilikoi dipping sauce is to die for!! Great atmosphere dining in the sand! Hula Grill was right next to where we stayed and we ate there a few times because we just couldn't get enough. Can't wait to go back!

"Take me back to ......"

After a hard day of laying on the beach and watching the beautiful tanned ladies go by there is nothing better than a Tall Cold One at the 'Grill'. You top that off with one of the many items on the menu coupled with the friendliness of the staff and you are definitely experiencing the Hawaiaan spirit. I highly recommend the Hula Grill and while it may be pricey for mainlanders it is in line with everywhere else in Lahaina. Mahalo

OK - but precooked fish
By ,
A great place and great location, and generally great service. Only one caveat: You have to be careful with their fish dishes, because they pre-cook everything and just finish it up before serving. Most of the fish is sauced up heavily enough that it hides it. I SUSPECT that if you insist, you can get it cooked from scratch. We have a place right next door and go there several times a year. I just wouldn't mistake it for fine dining even thought it costs just about as much. The best thing is to order in the lounge area (with your bare feet in the sand) some food that CAN'T be precooked like a burger or fried calamari. Then, you're in good shape. All in all, a really good place. BTW, Leilani's next door is owned and run by the same company and my comments would be pretty much the same for it.
