Royal not so Royal
We chose one of the garden cottages because they were described as very nice and private. Private they were, but nice they were not. They are probably 30 years old or more, with few if any upgrades beyond a coat of paint. Beds were uncomfortable, linens had holes in them, A/C was a window unit that did not do the job well, plumbing was very old and worn, door lock was standard in-knob keyset right out of the 70's or earlier. No deadbolt, no electronic lock. In room safe, but they change $3.75 per day for its use. Outrageous for a room costing over $200 per night! Wireless internet is a joke -- it is pay as you go, but the signal is too low and unreliable to be useful (I am a computer pro and know what I'm doing). The setting is extremely nice, as you would expect in Lahaina area, and maybe the newer tower is OK, but the cottages are just not worth $200 per night. Oh, and there is no complimentary breakfast either. The breakfast buffet was substandard. Average menu, most food lukewarm or worse, cost $20 per person. For other meals, menu service is expensive for the quality and the wait service is VERY slow. If you have a car and don't want to use the valet parking then you are charged $10 per day, but you share the lot with their evening Luau which means you probably can't park between 6PM and 9:30PM if you aren't already parked. Valet costs more, of course, but then it is their problem to find a spot - the best spots reserved for the valets, naturally. Overall, the resort is very overpriced for the quality. I cannot recommend this resort to other travelers.
