Huggo's on the Rocks
You take your nightlife where you can get it on the Hawaiian Islands - and in Kona, you can often get it (albeit in small doses) at this casual yet wonderful restaurant and bar. Huggo's On the Rocks serves an impressive selection of pupus (appetizers) for those folks who like to nibble while they imbibe. They also have a wonderful menu of casual lunch and dinner options. Visit this delightful spot for music, dancing and plenty of tropical drinks.
Beautiful, BEAUTIFUL setting. Excellent local food, fresh caught fish and authentic local recipes. Couldn't be better except for some other patrons, who tend to be big mouths from California in often big groups. Except for them, you really feel you're in old Hawaii. Go at lunch to avoid the Californicators.
This is a suprise waiting to happen. You will not expect the romantic beauty, the quality of food and service in what appears to be a low end restraunt. Do not pass Huggo's up as it is a wonderful experience. The outside beach bar next door has nightly music and great ocean front views.
On January 25, 2005 a group of us (11) went into Huggo's for drinks. We walked to the bar to be seated because there was no host at the door. We ask the cocktail waitress to seat us, but said they had no space for us although the bar was lest than half full. The manager of the evening, Joe Alopu, came out and was confrontational and told us our group could not put tables together for our group. Therefore, the group of 11 sat at to separate tables, and we ordered drinks & food. The cocktail waitress was reluctant to take our food order because it was 45 minutes before the kitchen closed, but she did. While waiting for our food two tables opened up outside on the lani, and we ask for permission to move there. The cocktails waitress said it was ok, and we moved. A few moments later the manager, Joe Alopu, came out to the lani, and told us we couldn't sit here. One of our ask why, and he said for us to leave, and we were escorted to the door. Incidently, the age of party of 11 was 38-70 years of age, including physicians, dentist, financial investors, etc. This man was very rude to all of our guests. None in our party will ever to go Huggo's again when we visit Kona.
I LIVE HERE SO I EAT HERE FREQUENTLY. READING THE BAD REVIEWS HERE TELLS ME THAT THESE PEOPLE HAVE NO ALOHA. I'VE EATEN THEIR OVER 100 TIMES.
YES IT IS SLOW SERVICE BUT WHAT'S THE HURRY? LOOK AT WHERE YOU ARE AT! YOU SHOULD BE GLAD THEY ARE SLOW, IT'S ALL ABOUT SLOWING DOWN AND ENJOYING THE MOMENT WHY RUSH THINGS. I'M GOING THEIR TONIGHT FOR MY 50TH BIRTHDAY. NO PLACE BETTER THAN THERE IN SPENDING A MILESTONE B-DAY LIKE THIS ONE
Huggo's has fabulous food. Not only did we enjoy the restaurant but their outside restaurant, Huggo's On The Rocks...was the best. Best steak, best fries, wonderful drinks and toes in the sand right up against the sea wall. Watch the feeding of the eels...Catch the green flash too, as the sun sets. Listen to live Hawaiian music and watch hula at is most beautiful...not a place to miss if you visit Kona. Only dislike...that we can't get there easily.
There was a 2 1/2 hour wait so we went to the bar for a drink & appetizers. Our server gave us the impression that we weren't welcome to wait there as bar customers so we had a drink and appetizers, then waited twenty minutes for our check which she never brought to the table so we finally went and tracked her down rather than just walking out. We don't know what the food was like as we never got the opportunity to try it. We went across the street and had an excellent dinner with fine service at Rio's!
My wife and I went without reversations. They were full and so we were told we could eat at the bar. The General Manager, Greg Peterson came by a starting talking to us and said that they would set a table up in section that was previously closed. The service was great, the food was great and we ended up eating there 2 nights later when my daughter joined us. Again, service and food great. We will return.
The cuisine was wonderful. The prices were fair and didn't give us sticker shock (family of 5) and service was both friendly and timely. It is very obvisous the staff have taken many a picture for their guests. And the reason is the view will absolutely knock your socks off! If you can time a dinner around sunset you won't care how the rest of your day went. Dinner reservations are a necessity and allow extra time to find parking. Don't forget to take your camera.
This is the perfect place for a romantic and elegant dinner on the beach. Although a little pricey...the food was divine. The staff is friendly; it is obvious they want their customer's expierence to be perfect. I highly recomend Huggo's to anyone who is planning a trip to Kona; however, it's not a place for young children.
