Joe's Bar & Grill

Description

Located above the Wailea Tennis Center, Joes has panoramic ocean views on one side and vistas of Haleakala on the other. Internationally acclaimed Chef Bev Gannon masterminds the menu, while husband Joe Gannon is credited with the theatrical lighting and inspiration of this popular dining spot. Wonderful comfort food, with a gourmet streak such as slow roasted prime rib, with mashed potatoes, our BBQ ribs, and Joes favorite meatloaf. Fresh local fish is also offered nightly including appetizers such as the ahi carpaccio and calamari. Don't forget about the "World famous crab dip"! The Seafood Pot Pie with fresh fish, shrimp and scallops is another favorite. Children are welcome, offering a fun kids menu and special drinks like the green gecko. One of Wailea's best Mai Tai's, crazy martinis, and and exceptional wine list from well known producers as well as smaller boutique wineries.

Great value for Maui!
By ,
Great food, great service, great sunset. Especially love sitting at the bar for pupus and drinks. Love the bartenders and they truely know how to make a mean cocktail! The pupu menu is famous. Very fun atmosphere. Joe's gets alot of local traffic as it is an excellent value for Maui.....not to mention Wailea.

Great Food in a Tennis Court Complex
By ,
Dined: July 8, 2007 5:30 pm Party of 2 Server: Billy Entrees: Grilled Onaga with Sweet Potatoes & Pumpkin Crusted Monchong with garlic mashed potatoes. Pros: Great friendly service from all the staff, Excellent food, Great menu choices. Cons: No atmosphere, inconvenient parking, tennis court view. Once you catch your breath from walking down the stairs and overcome the tennis court atmopshere. Joe's is really a great place to have dinner. It may not be a great place for a romantic dinner, but the food more than makes up for that. Our fish entrees were very delicious and tasty. The creme brulee and key lime martini for dessert were hevenly. But the highlight here, is the very attentive and friendly service. From the busboy, host, runners and to our very friendly & professional Billy everything was choregraphed perfectly, like a fine musical. We will be back definitely to Joe's Bar & Grill. Maybe, they is a reason to make you walk back up the stairs, to work off the great food and desserts. SGS Pearlridge, Hawaii 071107

An Unsuspected Surprise
By ,
We were taking a drive to the south end of Kihei and happened upon some signage indicating Joe's Grill was near-by. I had read a report earlier that it was a restaurant to go to during one's vacation. We were not actually planning to dine there that night but decided to give it a try. One problem, it is very difficult to find. Thankfully, there was a gentleman at the upper parking lot sitting in a golf cart. We stopped to ask him if he knew where Joe's was. As it turns out, he was a staff member of Joe's who was there to provide directions and/or give rides to those who wanted them, to the restaurant. We hopped into the golf cart for the short ride down the hill and were dropped off at the front desk. The building did not suit the beauty of the flora at the entrance, but we continued on. Mainly since the driver was such a friendly person. We checked the menu and decided to stay for dinner. We told the driver we were staying and he mentioned that from 5:00 to 6:00 pm all entree's were half price. Bonus. We were seated at an open window to catch the cool breeze and promptly offered water and menus. Warm bread arrived quickly and we placed our orders after hearing about the day's specials. We had prime rib with cesear salad and mahi mahi with summer salad. We accompanied our dinner with a bottle of German Reisling. Our entree's arrive shortly after we had finished our salads. The cesear had been prepared from scratch and was most tasty. The summer salad was nice and crisp. The prime rib was melt in the mouth and was more meat than fat. There was just the right amount of sauce to make it enjoyable. The mahi mahi was coated in macedamia nut and Japanese flour and drizzled with a wonderful sauce. It was the best fish I tasted on the Island. We could not finish off with dessert as we were quite full. We did have coffee which was mellow and flavourful. The meal was superb as was the wine choice. However, this was the only restaurant we encountered in Maui that automatically added a designated tip the bill. We were expected to pay 23% over the cost of our meal. This was a shock and it put a real sour note to what was becoming the best night of our stay there. We paid and called for the driver to pick us up for the drive up the hill. He was very prompt and we left without looking back. We want to take family and friends there, but will definately know our rights regarding the tipping situation before we go - if we do. Our usual tipping rate is 15 - 18% so why should this place be more special? The view is not fantastic like other restaurants we went to with ocean-front views (who incidently never added tip surcharges to the bills). And it's difficult to get to. The food was fantastic (like mentioned above) but the addition on the bill of a tipping charge must go. Through tipping, we express our review of a restuarant and we do not like being forced into it.

Try the Creme Brulee
I made it my mission to try the creme brulee everywhere I went. Joe's was the only place that had something unique, full of interesting fruit and a light pastry shell. It was delicious.

Go for the view

Beautiful 270 degree views are the best thing about this restaurant. It is a charming small location on top of the Wialea Tennis clubhouse. We arrived just before sunset are were treated to a window seat to watch another perfect Maui sunset. It is to bad the food could not match the ambiance. My guest started with the shrimp cocktail and I started with the baby greens salad. The shrimp cocktail was your average prawns in a cocktail sauce that tasted right out of a bottle. While the dressing was flavorful, there was nothing baby about the greens, they reminded me of the bags of mixed greens from the store. For the entr

Not bad, but not what we were expecting
By ,
The concierge at our hotel recommended Joe's because she said it had a little bit of everything. The menu had about 10-15 items, not quite what we were expecting. The food was average, the service was average, the ambiance and location were good, but overall the value was poor.
