Hanalei Bay Resort & Suites
Few places are as romantic as Kauaiand few hotels cater to romantics to the extent that this one does. Weddings can be seen almost any day, and the hotel is full of honeymooners, folks on anniversary or vacationing lovebirds. Of course, people who are not in the middle of a great romance can also appreciate this gracious hotel and its gorgeous beach front setting. A myriad of entertainment options are within easy driving distance, but fine dining can be enjoyed right on the property at Bali Hai. Required seven night stay with Saturday to Saturday check in/out. Planned daily resort activites, community BBQs, family picnic area, guided tours, horseback riding, hiking trails.
If you rent through a private owner you won't have the issues mentioned below. Those are million dollar condos and the owners put their love into them. They are really gorgeous. The timeshare owned rooms are going to be reonovated in the next few years. HBR is a beautiful property but you have to book through sites like Summit Pacific to get the best units. The views are outstanding, the pool was voted one of the top ten and the location can't be beat for exploring the North Shore. The restaurant was closed last time I was there, but should reopen next spring. They just put in a small fitness center, they offer massages and they even have a gift shop.
Just rent through an owner for a good experience.
Well first of all there was an extra $50 charge for cleaning and booking.. Because we booked through celebrity.. If you can BOOK THROUGH THE HANELAI RESORT DIRECTLY. Save yourself $25 if you can. They also charged $25 for cleaning (thats for the day we leave) there was no cleaning for the night we were there. The hotel was nice, great pool setup and location is ok.. you have to have a rental car if you want to see anything. The restaurant was also closed so no food available except for a guy bbqn near the pool.
Overall for the money it was ok.
I wouldn't suggest anyone who wants to be near anything like water, shopping, food (their restaurant is awful, their chef just quit) condo was not clean, very worn, air conditioning didn't work in one of the bedrooms. No wait staff at the pool, so don't get thirsty while your swim. Staff for most part was polite, but not trained well, couldn't even print a boarding pass, had to go up to the front desk at 3am to print it off, too far from beach, had to wait for the shuttle to come pick us up, couldn't take cars near your lodging, no where near the beach. You have to take their shuttle to get to the beach, so it isn't convenient to take much more than a towel, and there are no beach chairs or aminities. It is right next to the Princeville Resort, but you are only allowed to buy drinks at their bar, not use their facilities. So there isn't much more than sand if you stay at Hanalea Bay area. Never been so disappointed in a facility and location in all the years we have traveled. It is totally misrepresented when one checks on their advertisements. Our neighbors went a week before us, and they said the same things we did, very disappointing!!!
If we go again we will stay in the south part of the island. It is convenient, well appointed, nice hotels.
The place I would stay in the North would be Princeville Resort, it was beautiful, elegant and very convenient.
This place was a step out of the typical hotel and right in line with a tropical paradise hotel. The views were incredible and the beach was a very short walk down a path. Did I already mention the views!
Old Hawaii at its best, but I don't want you to go there...

I don't want to recommend this resort to anyone....because I don't want anyone else to compromise my ability to get a reservation there. It is absolutely beautiful, quiet, old Hawaii at its best, and with excellent (though moderately expensive) food. A first class place--recommended for the sophisticated older set, not the rowdy, nor those requiring constant attention. There is no nightlife, no nightclubs, and you are going to have to go elsewhere for go carts, video games, and theaters. Don't go here, because I don't want to share it.....
DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL!!!
What you won't be told when you make your reservation is that you will be charged an additional $35/day if you want room cleaning and an additional $10/day if you need towels. Staff are rude and management... what management? Trust a local and don't stay here.
