The palatial structure that stands in lonely splendor on South Kihei Road is not a hotel, or a mall, or even a gourmet restaurant. Instead it's a newer sister restaurant to Marco's Grill & Deli . Day and night, diners flock here to feast on Chocolate Cinnamon French Toast, homemade pasta and deli sandwiches. Marco's in Kahului is a longtime favorite in a small, modest building that's easy to bypass. Gian Don's is about three times bigger and caters to South Kihei condominium dwellers.
Pretty expensive for what you get. The service is pretty much like Denny's, but other than that the atmosphere is good. This restaurant used to be part of Marco's, but now it's called Gian Don's.(I don't know why your guide has 'em listed as don giona's) The menu is virtually unchanged from year to year to year...
Sorry, guys. This is an average diner made to look like fine dining.
If I could give this 0 stars, I would. 1 hr wait for food, even though the rest was only half full. The food was aweful. Veal was a pattie, shrimp scampi was a few grilled shrimp on a plate and no sauce. Nothing was good. Ever hear the expression about putting lipstick on a pig? Well the restaurant is very pretty, especially from the outside! Wish I had read this first!
I don't know why that other review was so negative. We enjoyed are dinner very much with a unique style both italian and an island twist, yummy, and the atmosphere was terrific. We waited for a table for just a short while and was very well treated at the bar where we had island styled drinks from one of the best bartenders we have ever come across, his name was Randy and he said he was from Michigan and loved the island and loved working there. We really enjoyed ourselves, everybody should try it. We went back for breakfest before catching our flight and it was just as good we sat out on the patio.
This is the worst place ever. The place was almost empty, which should have been a clue. The service was horrible. The waitress was very rude and slow to bring us our food and drinks. The food we had was awful, I ordered chicken with marinara sauce it tatested like it was microwaved and the sauce was worse than ragu.......
The sevrice was horrible and the food even worse. I had to aske four times for lemon for my water. My co-worker order a salad and I got charged for it. In addition, the restaraunt wasn't even busy. It was 7:45 pm when we sat down. Had to ask for the bill 3 times and finally had to go to the bar and get it. Finally, I put a tip of $0.00 on my receipt. When I got home and looked at my bill, I had a tip of $10.00.
NEVER eat at this place!
There are some places where paying $13 for a plate of eggs and pancakes is worth the cost because it just tastes THAT good.
Marco's is not one of those places.
While the ambiance was clean, pleasant, and well lit, the food was entirely uninspired, overpriced, and not worth a second visit.
And would it have been so hard to get a shaker of pepper?
Ihad been a loyal fan of Maro's in Kahului for years. A great place to grab a burger after a long flight. When Marco's South Side opened I was a little sketical. I was pleasantly surprised. My girlfriend & I began eating here on a regular basis (12 +/- times a month) for breakfast. The food was always excellent. The atmosphere pleasant & relaxed. Frankly the best omlette on all of Maui. My only complaint was the service. There were a few regular servers. The place seems to have suffered from high turnover. You would have thought that after 3-4 times a week for three months someone would reccognize us (We tip well; usually +20% here & no unusual requests/complaints) enough to say hi. I made a comment to one particular waitor we liked & he just said they don't stick around enough to recognize people. For service he was great the rest of them were a solid 2 out of 5 - disaapointing. If between then & now they regrouped I could offer a high praise. Go for the food & atmosphere, just don't expectmuch from the staff.
