Ok, here is the real skinny on Sushi in the Raw. Ru is a very fine chef and his people are very nice and friendly. The food they prepare here is exceptionally good too. Atmosphere is cramped, but very friendly. The selection of fish he carries is not as wide as some of the bigger establishments (like in Sac or Roseville) but what he has is very fresh and sometimes he even has some fish that is hard to find at the larger bars.
One drawback is that you really can't just drop in here when the urge strikes you for Sushi. I really prefer to sit with the chef and if thats what you want, you may have to place reservations up to a week or more in advance (I don't know if this is usual, but my experiences here seem to indicate it is)
This place is also rather expensive. I would say 20-30% higher in price than most places I have eaten at. When you take into account that this restaurant is in Nevada City, you can almost overlook this.. except.. Ru, I hope you are reading this! The portions here are very small. Now, I am not necessarily talking about rolls.. I don't usually eat my raw fish this way.. I am talking nigiri. The real sushi! While the preparation of the fish is first rate, there really needs to be a more healthy portion here. Sorry Ru, have to be honest.
Rating on 5 scale
Atmosphere: 3 cramped, tight space but
Service: 3 its a small joint and it takes a while.. but I'm in no hurry
Food: 3 The food quality is xlnt, but I can't rate higher til portion sizes are more in line.
I know its tough to make a restaurant work, especially in NC. But I think you are hurting yourself more by scimping on your customers than the money you make for it.
All in all, this is definitely the best Sushi in town. The other places don't come even close. If the portion size increases, I would re-rate this fine establishment to a 4 - 4.5.
I've had a lot of sushi in many places, regionally and nationally, and this is by far the best, most imaginative and freshest sushi that I've ever had. The chef puts his goodness into everything he prepares, and you can taste it with every bite. It is small, but well worth it. I love the atmosphere and the fact that there is very limited seating. If I want to go, I know I need to make a reservation...all the locals know that!
This is by far the best sushi place in the area if not the whole Sacramento area. Ru is an artist and is sauces are amazing. Some very imgainative combinations. The food will certainly not disappoint. The only problem is the wait. Plan on a two hour dinner. It is well worth the wait.
A must for sushi lovers-if you can get in- heres the scoop: If you plan weeks in advance, try to get seats at the chefs bar (the main sushi chef), but if you go last minute- you can try to get a seat at the front chefs bar (evan). You usually have to go at opening time, and put your name in for the wait list, but it is worth the wait. Evan, the front bar chef, is such a wonderful guy, and he makes the envrionment very laid back and comfortable. We usually dont go to sit at the tables, but the food is just as fabulous- but resevations are usually a week or two out for those as well.
