Tapa the World
Tapas are the Spanish equivalent of appetizers, and the tasty treats that bring a capacity crowd to Tapa The World. The decor, atmosphere, traditional Spanish cuisine and homemade Sangria transport you to Old World Spain. The Empanadas (meat pies) or Patatas Bravas (spicy potato cubes dipped in a delicious tomato sauce) are just an example of the many tapas on the menu. For a main dish, try the delightfully presented paella or one of tapas seafood dishes.
Wow, after reading some of these reviews I may never have tried Tapa the World, lucky for me I have been a regular customer for over 4 years!!!
The food has always satisfied my palate with delicious and interesting specials (go for lunch-they have a 3 course meal for $11!) I've also enjoyed menu staples such as the pesto chicken pita, the marcos pollo and the very traditional paella-so worth the wait! Of course, if you're dining at Tapa the World, you must try their Tapa plates: Kobe Beef, Grilled Vegetables, Shrimp, Mushrooms, Empanadas and THE BEST MUSSELS IN TOWN!
As for the service, I admit it is lacking at times-they always seem like they are in such a hurry! I guess it really depends on what server you get, some servers are absolutely wonderful and some are pretty average but all very nice and efficient. I have seen a definite improvement in the last few years-new management?
As for the ambiance, I love the dark, cramped corners- perfect for sipping a glass of wine from their extensive wine list or sharing a pitcher of sangria. I also think they have live guitar music every night. If you dont like the cramped seating, I recommend sitting at the bar-more room to spread out! The patio is also a fun spot to sit and people watch.
These are just a few of the reasons I keep coming back to this restaurant (the location also helps!) If I could complain about anything, I wish the bread was a little more consistent, sometimes its super fresh and warm and sometimes it's not. Either way the bread is super yummy with the dipping sauce of fresh garlic, balsamic and olive oil.
Finally, I must say that all my friends and family request to eat here while visiting, so it can't just be me!
If there was a no star rating I would rate it without any. The food was bland and without flavor. Chicken strips were dry and was simply grilled without seasoning. The service was very poor for the price you pay. Three waiters/waitress took our order. One each for beverages, order taking, and one for bringing out the food. They all tripped over each others' tasks. Meanwhile as soon as the food came out there was no one to keep my glass full. Outside seating is crap--some cheap aluminum chairs with dirty stick tables. Its just a reflection of the low quality they produce overall. With such hard economic times, it's really surprising how such a lame establishment can stay in business.
The worst food ever. I'm a huge tapas fan and finally went there. The tapas were so sorry looking and tasting. Just bland and boring. The best thing there is the dip for the bread.Never going back unless they actually manage to at least use salt and pepper in their food
Great ambiance, good bread and wine but the Tapas are lacking in creativity. The Cheese Tapas are nothing more than paper thin deli slices of cheese on a small plate. A variety of Spanish cheese wedges would be nice and more like the Tapas served in Spain. If not for the Live music I'd never go back.
This was one of the worst meals I have ever had. We went on Valentines Day, so it was doubley painful as they spoiled what was supposed to be the perfect end-note to a perfect day. We had reservations, but they still made us wait and seated people who did not have reservations before us. The flamenco guitarist was HORRIBLE! (I have lived in Spain. As you read this, keep in mind that I know what tapas are and I also know a bit about Spanish culture.) When we were finally seated, we had to yell to speak to each other, the restraunt was so crowded that the waitress could barely reach us. We ordered 3 tapas plates (croquettes, calamari and filet mignon tips) and a half bottle of wine. We asked for a recomendation on the wine, but waitress informed us that she didn't know much about it, only the owner did. So we guessed, and it was a VERY bad wine. Bitter with a metallic after-taste. And when the waitress was opening it, she spilled wine all over my guest! As best I can tell, it is acceptable to deliver obviously burnt food to a patrons table. The croquettes were burnt on the outside when delievered to us. This really upset me as it was delivered by someone other than our waitress, so it could not have been just this one employee. The calamari was rubbery. And the waitress decided to bring us the filet mignon dinner instead of the tapas plate. When we pointed this out to her, she told me that I hadn't been very clear when I ordered, and the dinner plate was one of the specials, so she just assumed. I asked her to take the filet off of the bill, and to bring us the check. I paid with $20's and was expecting $16 in change. I HAD TO ASK FOR THE CHANGE! She was going to keep it as a tip! She spilled wine on my guest and thought that she had earned a 40% tip. At this point we asked to speak to the manager, or owner, or anyone, but we were told (by two different waitresses) that the owner was unavailable.
So we left, disappointed and upset.
So, in summary, if you go here, only order bread... it's very good. That's about it, as far as I can tell, though.
