Since opening in an earlier guise as a Spanish restaurant in 1959, Espanol has seen, through a succession of chefs, its cuisine develop in an Italian direction. The dining room is pleasant with antique, gilt mirrors imported from Italy and gold fixtures. The menu features such Italian favorites as Veal Parmesan and Scaloppini, spaghetti, ravioli and linguine. In addition, the menu has an assortment of solid American fare including roast beef, roasted chicken, ham entrees. Side dishes are served in generous portions and are included with all dinners. A full bar is available.
I completely disagree with reviewer Gwyn. Italian food yes but also probably the best french fries I ve had anywhere and I appreciate them immensely when I order something other than Italian. I don t order seafood much but when I come to Espanol 9 times out of 10 I order the halibut. I get my french fries, pasta bowl, and the green beans (ask for them) and that is a-la-carte! Been going there for years with never a complaint.
Being life long neighborhood residents, we decided to revisit the Espagnol lst evening (March 4, 2012) to celebrate our wedding anniversary and will NOT return ever again. The minnestrone soup was like dish water (I can do much better when opening a can of Progresso). The salad was swimming in an unknown dressing and the veal parmesan appeared to be a hamburger patty covered in marinara sauce while it shared the other half of the plate with a half of a brocolli spear! There was a small dish of penne rigatta which appeared to have more water than sauce and a plate of GREASY French Fries. (If I were in a German restaurant ordering Schnitzel, I would expect French Fries but not with this dinner!!
Needless to say, we did not take our leftovers home and did not even wait for the ice cream. Just requested the bill (Scared the devil out of $50.00 with nothing to drink but water), and left.
Obviously the old days of good food so fondly remembered are a thing of the past to no longer be found at the Espanol.
Wow is all I can say about this place. Wonderful food, family stile lots of food. You will not go home hungry from this place. The soup is the best and my all time fav. They give you a large boul for the familly and if you want more they keep bringing it. Old time great food. enjoy.
They've been there for 80 years and every time you enter, the hostess invites you to the dining area. Just like being invited to dinner in their home. The best minestrone in Sacramento. The special chicken is outstanding, and a must for those garlic lovers. The Espanol reminds me of neighborhood Italian restaurants on the east coast. I've been going there since the 60's and they haven't changed a bit.
Espanol's is as Italian as yo can get for Northern California. It reminds me of being in my Grandmother's kitchen. The service is unbeleivable and their Minestrone is a contender to my Grandmother's, LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!
When my husband and I are in the mood for some harty, mouth-watering, melt you out of your seat good Italian food, we pay a visit to Espanol. Once you're seated a waitress will set a bowl of minestrone soup that serves at least five people on your table and you can eat out of that all evening. Following close behind the soup are bread and salad. Just as your getting full your delicious entree will be served. I give props to anyone who can eat their entire entree without having at least a little to take home. The staff are friendly and hard-working. It's such a great experience! Go tonight and enjoy!
