Rick's Dessert Diner

Description

This small restaurant is entirely devoted to dessert. The dining area is a classic 1950s style. The booths and counter stools are done in chrome and pink-and-black vinyl. The huge jukebox plays doo-wop, early rock classics and the occasional bubble gum pop tune. The desserts are memorable. Pies of all kinds are lined up in the display cases, along with towering layer cakes. A couple of slices of chocolate cake oozing with two kinds of chocolate or lemon meringue pie can be meals in themselves. Be sure to bring cash as credit cards are not accepted.

I am a big dessert fan, but this place was a bit disappointing. The service was actually quite good. The man behind the counter was polite, and I didn't feel rushed at all. However, the food was only average. Maybe I didn't order the best items, but personally, the pie at Marie Callender's is less dry and much better. The white chocolate-champagne cake was an impressive 6 layers, but the frosting was too hard and the bread seemed slightly stale. I like my frosting whipped and fluffy. So, 4 stars for service, 3 for general cleanliness, and 2 for food. If you like sweets, check it out, but it can't be the best dessert you'll ever taste.

BEST GODDAMNED DESSERT I HAVE EVER HAD. Me and my went after it came highly reccomned by a friend of mine. We went on a friday night the place was packed and found a it a little hard to get a table since the place is quite small. The line, everwinding was absoultly worth the wait i had this chocolate mousse thing with carmel and oreo on the outside it was outstanding. My wife had this chocolate cake that was reccomnded by the lady behind the counter.this cake is the kind that would pop up in a diabetics nightmare - gigantic, rich, and oh so rich. i think it was called the chocolate death cake. We will defenitly be back and spread the word. My wife thought it was a shame that we didn't know about earlier for our wedding cake. I can't wait to come back

The cake slices are so thin you can practically see through it, the restaurant is dirty, and the prices are a jip. You would get a much better dessert going down the street to the Safeway on 19th and S.

My experience here is the people behind the counter would rather be someplace else or talking on their cell phone. I've ate here twice and the experience was the same. Hurry up and chose, I have other things to do. The chocolate cake was a bit dry. The good news though, was the girl was in such a hurry, she gave me back 3 extra dollars in change.

Yummy Cakes but...
By MsLushes, 12/6/07
I love the cakes they had on display but the prices are so high. I bought two slices of cake, a soda and two pastries and my total was almost $25. That is so horrible. They need to lower the prices. The cakes were awesome. I ate the white chocolate champange it melt in my mouth. Also, the place is awful small. They need to remodel. The has a 1950's atmosphere. They need to get over it and just remodel and make the place bigger. Bigger booths or tables. Also, get good customer service. The display case should also be bigger and lighting should also be change. Rick's should also have a website.

NOT dependable!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/2/07
We had been to this place before only because they sold a unique cake flavor. This year I ordered the cake a week prior to the day we would need to pick it up. I even spoke to the owner & he took my order. The day of the persons birthday we drove a half hour to this place & when we got there they told us they didn't have it. Supposedly they had no order or record of it & out of every cake they had they didnt have the one we needed. It was the DAY of the persons birthday! They did not apologize, try to fix the issue, offer anything, etc. We went to a different bakery which was very friendly & helpful & we were done within 5 minutes. Although we didnt get the cake we had ordered they accomodated us. How could you ever trust a bakery like Ricks with something important such as a wedding cake when they cant even remember a birthday cake? Maybe I should have waited until the last minute & ordered it the day before so they wouldn't be incompetent & lose it.

Just like grandma would make! Yummy!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/22/07
Desserts are presented with the look of a perfessional bakery and with the taste of elegant rich homemade taste. My sister as well as myself ordered serveral desserts for our wedding. Awesome decision on our part if I don't say myself.

Trendy
By 4ayes, 8/5/07
The desserts were attractively displayed; and above average restaurant quality. I ordered a slice of strawberry cheesecake, my partner Pecan Pie ala mode. It was OK- apx $13.00 wihout beverages I think A tad too much. Nice patio (they could find more seating space) The cute gentleman behind the counter was helpful and friendly (if obviously rushed) but the cashier was barely friendly.
