Bread Store (The)
The sandwiches are tasty and almost too large to put in your mouth. A good selection of deli sandwiches, as well as vegetarian specials is available. You can purchase loaves of bread, muffins, cakes and other baked goods. Try the broccoli, cheese and potato soup served with half a sourdough bread bun. Tables are small and the main seating area gets very crowded at lunch, but you can escape to the covered patio seating.
I was a little disappointed with today's visit to the Bread Store. The bread is great, but my avocado, lettuce and tomato sandwich had very little avocado. Also, I observed someone returning food--the bread that came with their salad--and after the employee gave them the right bread, she took the bread back and returned it to their bin to be used by another customer. Once food goes over the counter, you shouldn't take it back and reuse it.
I have not been so disappointed in a Sacramento restaurant in a very long time. The bread factory may have good bread but it is not a bad idea to stick to what we do best. At lunch, the food is overpriced, very average quality (I think a bag of potato chips qualifies as very average), served in a messy, unkempt environment by disinterested, disheveled workers. A suggestion, if you plan to eat lunch in the restaurant, you may be better off ordering to go, since those orders will be made before those planning to eat in.
This is one of the few places I'm going to miss when i leave sac. They have by far the best bread I have had and I recomend getting a whole loaf in the morning or you can get a hold of Andy to place a order for a later pick up date. The sandwhich and salad selection is vast and filling.
Awesome food, and the service is amazing. I love the way I get treated there! You can not get a better sandwich downtown. The only place that comes close is the Italian Market, but the Bread Store is the best in downtown Sacramento!!! Get the Cuban and tell them Louis sent ya!
The sandwiches, bread, and soup are great and the place has a nice atmosphere, but the service is very slow. Which is suprising because they usually have a lot of people working.
The bread alone is worth going down there for lunch, but if you don't have a lot of time, I would suggest a weekend when you're not in a hurry. It is kind of price for a sandwich and soup shop, but they do give you a lot of food. For instance, the 1/2 soup or salad and 1/2 sandwich combo gives you a 1/2 sandwich which could really be considered a whole size. Plus, you get a small soup or salad AND about a 1/4 of a baguette (really good!).
