This eatery caters to the purist who prefers the tradition and quality of a small sushi bar rather than the showy sushi spots springing up in the suburbs. While the rolls have names like Rock & Roll and Caterpillar , the makings are traditional all the way. Fresh water eel, masago, black caviar, shrimp and tuna are combined in the traditional manner by experienced chefs. The shrimp tempura is fresh and crispy. Its menu also features several non-sushi dishes.
Service was AWFUL!! We were seated at 11:40am only to wait 10 minutes for someone to take our order. At least 4 other tables of guests arrived, were seated and had their orders taken by the time we gave our order (they had a different waitress). One of the 3 of us in our party ordered a roll, the other two a lunch combo box. The friend who ordered the roll received it within 10 minutes, the lunch combos didn't arrive. After 20 minutes of waiting and we complained to the waitress about the length of time we'd been waiting for our food, the waitress offered edamame and said we would get our food in 5 minutes. Meanwhile, 3 of the 4 tables of guests who arrived after us received their food and were nearly done. After an additional 10 minutes of our supposed 5 minutes wait we were expecting our food would be ready, we decided to leave. We informed our waitress we were leaving and paying for the roll only, since our food still wasn't available and now would need to be served in to-go boxes. The waitress said she could offer us a 10% discount (equivalent to .95cents), and brought us the to-go boxes. A second waitress came over stating this was the first she heard of our poor service and that we need to pay before we leave. There was NO APOLOGY, NOTHING OFFERED, just a brief statement stating they've been busy and a group before us was their reason why our food was late. We informed the waitress the other tables seated after us didn't have the same problem and we also ordered lunch boxes. Again, NO APOLOGY. The waitress again said you need to pay before you can leave with this food. We refused the food, she took it to the back (which I'm hoping they threw away and didn't serve to other customers). Ultimately, the reaction of the waitress is the extreme disappointment. Many of our co-workers frequent Zen and after this experience will go somewhere else where the service is better and apologies are provided when service is poor.
The service was very good. The food was just ok. I made the mistake of ordering a baked roll that was topped with mozzarella cheese. This roll was nearly impossible to eat, much less pick up with chop sticks. Most of it tasted burnt. I hate to say it, but the table and the restaurant in general felt kind of dirty. I don't think we will be going back.
...ZEN SUSHI used to be Takas. Takas closed suddenly, and we were left out in the cold...but then they reopened in a new location as ZEN SUSHI.
fish is still amazing and fresh and wonderful. Lou and Meredith are still serving it up with a smile...but the new atmosphere is kinda strip mall-ish/sterile, and the sound system sucks. We loved the homey vibe of the old location...the only way they could improve the dining experience (because the fish and service and prices are excellent) is by getting a MUCH BETTER SOUND SYSTEM and kicking out some reggae jams like the used to do...despite my criticisms, this is THE BEST SUSHI IN SACRAMENTO, hands down.
we loves the rolls: lou's roll, susan's roll, zig zag roll (off the hook!!!!), oyster mushroom tempera, zen sunomono, yum yum yum yum yum.
I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! I have tried just about every spot in sac and this is by far my favorite. I will always be loyal to Zen-Toro!
This place is the former Taka's sushi from S @ 17th... check out those reviews too.
This is a small place but nice, quick service, great food also prices are about right that won't hurt your buget! Usually when I go its just my gf and I and we sit at the bar and very please with them!
