Sandra Dee made her debut in the kitchen at age 9, but learning the art of cooking goes back generations in her family. Her grandmother and mother encouraged her eagerness to learn by letting her help them in the kitchen since before she could walk. The family tradition was to meet every Sunday at Moemoe's house, that's another way to say grandmother (MA..re) in French; as you see Sandra's family added a little flavor to everything they did. It was on these days she watched her gradmother and mother, the eldest of 13 children, cook up a storm. She witnessed the care put in the preparation while peeling potatoes or cutting onions, and very quickly began to create her own recipes and personalize her own cooking style. Now that she owns her own restaurant she can share her unique creations as well as the authentic Creole dishes passed down through the generations. Just one taste of her homemade sweet potato pie and you'll experience the love Sandra Dee puts in every dish. Sandra always says, I love what I do, and If you don't leave out our restaurant with a smile, then I feel I did not do my job .
All I know is I am VERY PICKY..because of all the good cooks in my family. The food was OFF THE HOOK!!! I had the rib tips, collard greens and cornbread. My date had the fried catfish and collard greens. It was all very delicious!! The portions were more than my date could almost finish.. We even ordered a third plate for breakfast! Sandra was very welcoming as an owner should be.. This was my second time here, and we WILL be back!!....Tracee & Tony (Richmond, CA)
If you are after good ribs, this is a place you should try. This is not a romantic place, not a flashy restaurant. It is deliberately designed to look like a hole-in-the-wall kind of corner restaurant, but there are flat screen TVs for sports enthusiasts and the service is actually pretty good. Based on the pork ribs and the deep-friend catfish my husband and I ordered, and the price of meals, it is a 4 star.
One of the most consistent places (good to excellent food, fair to excellent service)we,ve ever been to! We have to get our Sandra Dee's fix at the very least once a month. Texas BBQ doesn't come close.
oh my goodness you have to order the fried chicken...with extra seasoning! (available thursdays, fried wings avail. every other day). anyway this is my favorite BBQ. If you're a texas west fan you will definitely change after you try Sandra Dees...really!
I have had BBQ all across the states and this is just about the best I have ever had. In Sacramento, it is the best, period!
The ribs & the chicken are the best. The side dishes are also very nice.
The service has always been prompt, friendly and efficient.
If you are looking for some high end restaurant to impress someone, this aint it. If you are looking for consistently good BBQ, this IS the place in Sacramento. I own a national BBQ rub & sauce company, so I know some BBQwhen I eat it.
I read some of the other reviews that gave 2 stars, said the food or service wasn't so good and I am perplexed. I think they must have ate somewhere else. The only downside is there is only on street parking.
For my husbands birthday I thought I would order a special bbq dinner to take home. I ordered the 4 choice. Tri tip and ribs we ok. Only got 2 pieces of shrimp which were old. Cat fish was bland. The cornbread they advertise was only a very small corn muffin. Would not order again.
My Wife and I have tried easily a dozen different BBQ places here (it's our favorite food), and we agree that BY FAR, Sandra Dee's is the best. The ribs, for instance, are fall off the bone tender, and the sauce (we like mixing hot and mild) is delicious. My wife always says the it's the closest she's had to her Dad's sauce, and he was apparently the expert Southern BBQ chef. In any event, I will no longer need to try other places. What a great restaurant! The sides are great too, and the service has always been very good, quick and friendly. Try it. You'll love it. We've been at least 20 times in the last two years.
More good food downtown. Real food for real people! Loved the barbequed chicken! The half chicken dinner is more than enough for seconds as you can't eat it all at once. The greens are made healthier with turkey instead of pork. The hubby enjoyed both the beef and pork ribs on the different occasions he tried it. Terrific red beans and rice and cornbread as well. The shrimp creole was also very good, althogh there was not enough shrimp in it. We ordered take out each time and the food was great even after we got it home. Each time we went the place was fairly busy. We highly recommend it.
