I love Daphne's. This is a chain I became familiar with in Southern California. Glad to see I can find it up in Northern California.
The food is tasty, if stripped down from traditional Greek, but I for one am a HUGE fan of the fire feta! Skip the Spanikopita, it's too greasy. Try the spicy chicken salad... you just might love it as much as I do!
Daphne's Greek Cafe is a chain restaurant that is beginning to pop up in Northern California. In fact, there are now two restaurants in Roseville alone. This review is about the location on Sierra College Boulevard.
First of all, when you walk in, you are greeted by an employee with a menu. The move to the counter is relatively quick, and I have yet to be greeted by anyone other than a pleasant employee. That alone is a nice change from some fast-food or take-out chains.
The variety on the menu is good, ranging from gyros (delicious, but not as good as those I've had in France) to ka-bobs to a veggie platter with spanakopitas and hummus. I found the chicken to be a bit dry, and I tend to stick with either the gyros, calamari, or veggie platter. Still, my family members seem to enjoy the chicken as well.
As you wait for your order, either to eat there or to go, you are treated to a variety of Greek music; some modern and some less so. Frankly, I enjoy this music, even though I had not heard much Greek music prior to my visits here. It can be a bit addictive!
The service is relatively quick, although at busy times things can slow down drastically. The prices are okay, though not the most economical. Most plates run around $8, and if you get a drink you can expect around $10 per person. Still, they don't skimp on the food. If you like sweets, go ahead and add the baklava. It is sticky, sweet, and dangerously good.
Overall, I find myself returning to this restaurant about once a month, for the variety, the good food, and the friendly service. The only thing that keeps this from being a five star rating is the price and the fact that the tzatsiki sauce is a bit too flavorless. Give the place a try, though. It is a great way to sample Greek food if you never have done so before. And you don't have to worry about smashing plates or drinking ouzo.
