The best thing I can say about Papa Gianni's is that it is average.
The food is average, the last server we had was above average but
previous servers were just ok.
they need to go back to Restaurant School 101. They are missing the basics of a family run and feel Italian place.
My biggest complaint is that they are not friendly. The owner never
greets you nicely and although we have been there several times, because
let's face it there is no where else for Italian. He peeks into the dining area
but never makes anyone feel welcome. The food is ok, but don't expect SF South Beach.
This is ok for hot pasta and meatballs, the vodka sauce is ok and lasagna ok. But it is as expensive as any Italian restaurant in SF.
The wait staff makes no recommendations and for an Italian restaurant, you would expect a
welcoming and family feel. It isn't here. It's just ok
I prefer chains like Macaroni Grill if I want run of the mill Italian, at least it would be cheaper.
We have been going here since it has opened and have never had a bad meal or bad service and will rival any restaurant in San Francisco. The gnocci with vodka sauce is the best I've ever had. They have a chicken and mushroom dish which is out of this world. We have several friends that drive from Sacramento (close to 35 miles) just to go to this 'Ristorante'.
My Family has been going to Papa's since they first opened many years ago. NEVER had a bad meal! All their sauces are fresh and different, not the same sauce with different meats thrown in it. The gnocci ala vodka is awesome, scampi fradiavolo is fantastic, and it is the ONLY place in this area to get Veal Parmesan, which is to die for! They serve local wines, and even the House wines are unexpectedly delicious. You won't be disappointed, and who needs anything else but good delicious food, isn't that what you are really paying for...?(San Francisco sucks)
BEST local Italian food! My Husband and I have been going for years. The food is great. The service is great. The atmosphere is great, very intimate. If you love Italian food you will love Papa Giannis!
We had been searching for a top drawer Italian restaurant in our neighborhood and thanks to a neighbor, found Papa Gianni's about two years ago. We continue to re-visit this restaurant for its fabulous food - EVERY appetizer, the SOUPs (!), all the chicken dishes and my wife just LOVES the seafood! Go often....we do!
