I've eaten at Hunans for many years and have always enjoyed a pleasant dining experience. I'm usually with my family and out-of-town guests and everyone has nothing but nice things to say about the food and the service. I've eaten at many Chinese restaurants, and the vast majority seem to have a sameness about them. For some reason, Hunans food is always a notch above the rest in flavor and quality. Even standards like fried rice or sweet and sour soup are delicious. I'd recommend Hunans to anyone who wants excellent Chinese food in Davis.
hunans is the bomb baby.... the lunch specials are so good. Cheap (no more than 7 bucks i'd say) plates that come heaping with food, salad or soup, rice, and noodles...The best is the honey crispy walnut shrimp, i dont even like seafood, but this is the only thing I get when I am there..besides the water is tasty too..and the friday soup is yummy.
If you like chinese food you should eat here. If you don't like chinese food you should eat here. The quality is excellent! Sometimes chinese food can be too salty, but this place does it just right. I've never eaten sit down style at the restaurant, I always do take out. There is a 10% off discount for take out orders, a nice plus! The chicken chow mein is their best dish (the have a veggie version of it too). Not a big fan of the wor won ton soup. There wasn't enough veggies and meat in it. Just thought I would mention that they charge you the same for one order of white rice as they do for two orders. Nonetheless, the food is flavorful and the portions are generous. I'd bike all the way to Hunan's for an order of chicken chow mein if I had to. Wait I minute...I do bike there because I'm a college freshman without a car!
For a variety of reasons, I hadn't been to Hunan for several years. It was my parents' favorite Chinese restaurant, so we often ate there when I visited from Sacramento. After they both passed, I got out of the habit, even though I'm now a Davis resident. Also, I like to explore newer places, both Chinese (like the excellent Jade Garden) and other cuisines. Anyway, I finally returned for dinner with a friend visiting from Sac. My guest had cashew chicken, I had almond chicken and we shared an egg roll appetizer and a side of rice. The food was good, the service was prompt and the prices very reasonable. I won't say Hunan is the best in the region, but it ranks with my top half dozen favorites in Davis and the greater Sacramento area.
