Taka Watanabe has been making sushi for over 20 years. He arrived in the U.S. in 1986 from his native Brazil, where he was raised by Japanese parents but educated in Portuguese. His parents instilled in him a love of good food, and cooking. He remembers fondly watching his mother make sushi for the family on special occasions. As soon as he arrived in the Bay Area, he immediately found work in a Japanese restaurant, where he quickly learned to make sushi. In 1989, he met and married his wife, Susan, and shortly thereafter, relocated to Sacramento.
Service was great but the sushi was not. I had two rolls that both had deep fried items in them. The fried items tasted like the oil in the fryer had not been changed in awhile. That ruined the taste of both rolls.
have eaten at Taka's many times before over the past 6 years and have even attended several of his specialty dinners. While at times the service can be a bit slow the food has always been very tasty until today, My daughter and I stopped mid afternoon for a late lunch. We ordered sashimi and sushi. When it arrived it was arranged nicely, but the smell that came from each of our plates screamed spoiled fish. It appeared to be coming from the tuna so we flagged our server and asked that it be sent back. A server (not ours) marched up to the table and questioned why we were sending it back. At that moment Taka came flying out of the back room literally yelling that it was fresh, that he had received it that morning and that there was nothing wrong wtih it. He did this in front of about 10 restaurant patrons. I have been eating sushi for 15 years and this is the first time I have ever sent something back. What I really didn' t like is that he challenged us and it was in a threatening manner. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone and will never go back.
Easily the best japanese food in Sacramento!!! Kicks Mikuni's and all others' butts.
My wife and I love Taka's and have been loyal customers for 7 years. The sushi, chicken katsu, ramen, etc are excellent.
Great service and laid back ambiance.
They make the freshest sushi in town with a great blending of flavors. They'll custom-make any roll you don't see or meet your taste preferences. Taka and his staff are ALL sushi masters in our book! (They also have some cooked rolls if you don't want to try the traditional raw fish varieties.) For a real treat, gather some friends and order a sushi boat! Now, that's a treat!
