The decor is well lit and pleasant here, featuring off-white floor tiles that extend up the sides of the raised booths. The menu at Kathmandu Kitchen is quite extensive. Expect to spend a long time lingering over successive courses offered for many meals. Appetizers include the house specialty, Jingha Til-Tinka (deep-fried prawns coated with sesame seeds). Seafood courses also include many types of prawns. Vegetarians will find an extensive choice of dishes. A main course of lamb can be served in many ways, including the traditional lamb curry, or tandoori-style.

My dinner guest and I both had a spicy lamb curry dish (they'll serve it mild, medium or spicy to suit your taste), accompanied by white rice, a flavorful cauliflower/potato mix, lentil soup, and naan (the pita-style bread) with a yogurt dip. He chose a chutney side and I had a spicy pickled veggie mix instead. The lamb was melt-in-your-mouth tender. The waitresses were very friendly & attentive, checking to see if our food was OK and our water glasses refilled. I've also had their very good and reasonably priced lunch buffets several times.
This is one of my boyfriends and my favorite places to eat in davis. We try something different each time and are always pleased. If you are worried about food being too spicey, don't, they will gladly make the food's spice to your liking!
People! Have any of you had good Indian food before? We tried the place twice - first time it was mediocre and the second it was gawd-awful! The smell from the kitchen was even nasty. That should have been our first clue. I'm still reeking a day later from just sitting in there. The service was terrible, too. No one checked on us to see if things were ok, and the plates sat on the table when we were done for about 30 minutes. I had to get someone to remove them. The food was deplorable. The only good thing was the water and the nan bread. Even the papadum was too salty, and even its dipping sauce was lousy. The lamb was mostly grisly, fatty dried up chunks of barely recognizable meat. The vegetables tasted like they were all previously frozen, and the seasonings were terrible. We are never going back.
We often dine at Kathmandu Kitchen for lunch and dinner. The dinner menu is extensive, we love the variety they offer. We also frequently dine in for the lunch buffet as well, the selection is phenonminal. Someone in a previous review wrote they only have three items, maybe they have Kathmandu confused with raja's or something. Kathmandu has a huge selection in their buffet at least ten entrees, and that isn't including the naan, pakoras, kheer,it is excellent. This place has always been consistant in providing me with delicious food and friendly service. I will continue to keep Kathmandu as one of my favorite places to dine at in Davis.
The food is great, no question.
It lacks ambiance a bit and I've had problems with service (like bringing one persons dish 15 minutes before someone else at the table), but they always seem friendly.
They're great for take-out.
