I have been eating at porter street bbq for a few years now I will never set foot in the place again should have Known after the last time with bones in the chicken that it wasn t going to get better this time, one bone in my chicken A friend order twenty dollars worth of beef ribs, they were un eatable didn t even want to give to my dog. The potato salad was bad, his slaw was so sweet it was not eaten we complained they said it was always possible to get bones in chicken well this place is definately ready for a restaurant impossible show If this was not a college town they would be closed by now
This used to be one great place. The decor was always average but the ribs were great and affordable. They had the Porter Street specials too that really made it a great place to go to. They still do a lot of outdoor cooking since they have a huge pit. Unfortunately, the place has gone down hill quite a bit and relies largely on what it once was and not for what it now is. They have gotten more and more expensive and with less and less food for that buck. The employees really don't care about the establishment because it is no more than a job while going to HSU and a few free unauthorized meals here and there. I could only imagine that the owners want this to be a self guided business now and don't really want to get there hands dirty with the actually running the business with pride anymore. Seriously, where's chef ramsey now. Show that you even care anymore about you business and give us your local customer base some deals we can really sink our teeth into. I do like the chili and slaw a lot though. Thank You, Still Barely Keeping the Faith.
Just visited this place last Thursday while taking our son to see Humboldt State. Worst BBQ we've ever eaten. Barly warm beef ribs cooked without any sauce. The you put your sauce on yourself. Sauce tastes like Sweet Baby Ray's. My son had a pork sandwich and then had an upset stomach. How this place stays in business is beyond us, must be the only game in this small town. Pass this one and enjoy some good food elsewhere!
Just tried the restaurant based on reviews. The place has an average local cafe look. I ordered the spare ribs. I received a pile of boiled fatty ribs. After pulling some fat off, I tried the meat- tasteless. Putting the sauce on was not much of an improvement. I threw most of it away and had an upset stomach for a few hours. I think it gets good reviews because there are few meat eaters in the area and this is the only BBQ!
I went here at least once a week when I was a student @ HSU that was almost 10 years ago, and I still make a special stop to come here when ever I drive up the coast through Arcata. I will be bringing my daughter here for the first time this summer and I know she is going to love it as much as I do
This is a great place to get FAST bbq. their bbq is always going, and you can smell it from miles away, which makes you want it even more. on a sunny day you can sit outside on their patio, which isn't necessarily pretty, but nice to get out. Their bbq sandwhiches are unique, puting the meet on garlic bread. I usually enhance it with a little cheddar cheese, though it's good without it as well. We often take our kids here because it doesn't matter if they are loud.
