Dined at Jhanthong Banbua tonight with a friend. Excellent service - prompt and friendly. The lemongrass soup and lettuce wrap were tasty. My favorites was the tarot root balls and the eggplant with shredded shrimp and chicken. I had never had eggplant cooked that way before. The server said it was grilled whole in the skin, then the skin removed and sauce poured over it. It was light, soft and fluffy, not oily at all, not at all the texture usually associated with eggplant. The hot jasmine tea very nice, much better than jasmine tea I've had in other establishments. All in all an excellent light meal. I'll definitely be back to try some of their other dishes.
It wasn't amazing. I have had much better. Thier That Iced Tea is really good but, expensive for the 12 oz size. However the staff is friendly. Parking is a nightmare during lunch hours. Next to a run-down motel. Overall I probably would not go here again.
This place was my first taste of Thai food during my freshman year of college. I had remembered it being good, but hadn't been back since. Well for the last month I have been craving Thai. So today for my Birthday my husband surprised me by taking me out for Thai food and Jhanthong Bandua is where he took me.
Everything was wonderful! The food, the staff, the tea. I was in Thai heaven. For appetizers we had the grilled calamari witch was new for me (I have only ever had it fried). The texture took a second to get used to but the flavors were great. We also shared the yellow curried chicken skewers with the peanut sauce. OMG! It was amazing I was sad I only got 2 for myself.
For dinner we shared the chicken Pad Thai which my husband and I both agreed was our favorite. We also really enjoyed the red curried prawns in the peanut sauce. We shared one other dish, but we didn't love it, but we didn't hate it.
When the waitress came to see how we were doing I told her it was the best birthday dinner I had ever had! She wished me a happy birthday, cleared our plates and walked away. Then, moments later, she walked out with the hostess and fried bananas with coconut ice cream and sang me happy birthday. It was so nice! It was the perfect way to end my night (and very delicious too).
My husband and I will defiantly be back and I plan to bring my mother too. Their food and hospitality has guaranteed them life time customers.
Just ate here about four hours ago. Wow, its amazing how you see trends in reviews. Overall, excellent Thai food, marginal bordering on poor service.
It is odd to sit down in a restaurant five minutes after they open and wait 20 minutes to have any approach your table.
Food was excellent, I recommend the coconut soup. Very nice. Servers were aloof, bordering on rude. Um, aren't I the one doing you the favor by eating here, not the other way around?
I have eaten at probably 50+ Thai joints around California, but alast never in Thailand. This food was second only to a place in San Diego, but had probably some of the worst service.
I say go for great food, put up with the service.
Out of all the Thai resturants I have been to, i would say that this one is the most family based. It has a great reputaion with the locals and a wide variety of food to choose from. Service is great, the age range for the waiters is 16 to 60 I'm pretty sure. They know how to be polite and please their costumers. Everytime i go here i always tip a little extra just because i always leave there happy :D
First off, I'm going to discredit these other reviews that say that the service is bad at this establishment. My wife and I have eaten at Jhanthong Banbua for over 8 years and have never been treated poorly. In fact, all of the servers we've had during that time have been nothing but quiet, sweet and attentive. Now, getting to the food...it's top notch, and very affordable. We've also taken a variety of friends to the restaurant for their first time, and they all agreed that it was absolutely delicious. The only downside, and it's minor, is that the restaurant is located in front of a pretty sketchy motel...the kind that probably rents rooms by the month or by the hour. =P Overall though, this place is well worth a look. So, don't let the reviews below sway you away from this wonderful Thai food.
I didn't like it at all. The only thing tasty was the egg rolls but they were $6 for three egg rolls cut in half! The service was slow and unfriendly. They took our dishes away before we were done because it was clear what was left was inedible hard unknown vegetables. I kept looking for the soy sauce. I lived with Lao-Khmu people for 8 years and their food was much better than this.
