I'm a fan of indian food and was kinda bummed on my food selection when moving back to Santa Rosa. I found out about this place from a friend and was skeptical at first, being spoiled from all the amazing Indian food I had in San Francisco.
I arrive and immediately greeted and seated in a place that seemed to be pretty busy (always a good sign on a thursday). They had a gentleman playing a traditional sitar which gave an added lift to the places ambiance. We were immediately served water and were asked if we'd like to start with any drinks.
We ordered Vegetable Samosa for appetizer and my boyfriend ordered a lamb dish and I ordered one of their egg dishes. We were asked about the spice level and were given recommendations on each dish.
All dishes came out promptly and in order, this is something I've noticed in most Santa Rosa restaurants to be an exception not a rule.
Everything was delicious, I highly suggest their samosa and their curries. I was a little disappointing in the rice and they charge a bit much for plain rice with peas. I rice with saffron and if you serve plain rice, please charge no more than 1.50 per serving.
Water was always filled and we both felt that we were welcome, well served and that our opinions counted.
I five this 4/5 because while the food was good and the staff was wonderful, some decor and price adjustment for what you get could use a little finessing.
We have been frequenting this restaurant for quite a few years more or less frequently. This place did get better over time, as regards to the food and the ambiance but recently (July) we had an extremely bad experience: the food was terrible salty in particular the lentil soup and the curries - the pancakes (Masala) were OK like they used to be. We returned the soup but it came back the same way.
I wonder if somebody else had the same problem, since the last review here is from May. I hope it get's fixed because we used to like this place until the food tastes like it's cooked with dead sea water.
update as of 3/2011. We dared to go there again. This time we did not have soup, so I cannot comment on that. We did have an egg&spinach based and ons Chicken curry and both were OK, like they used to be. the extreme saltiness that prevented us from going there for almost 2 years is gone. I liked the Naan (we had the Garlic Naan) and did not consider it burned, like another reviewer did. Upgraded to 4* again.
Based on my last experience, I'll upgrade this place to 4* again.
Sizzling Tandoor has always been a stable downtown source of consistent Indian cuisine. However, since recently changing owners, they seem to be going through a bit of trouble, and the food has declined. We'll hope for improvement!
I've been to this restaurant several times. I'd have to say that I keep coming back because of the food! They have a good selection, for vegetarians and non-vegetarians. Pricing is good esp. for the buffet at lunch time.
I would love to love this place, but... it is just not special. Last time I was there, I had lamb, it was dry. Other meals I have had there have been OK, but not outstanding. We love Indian food (I've had lots of it in London and New York), and will probably go back, but only because we cant seem to find really good Indian food in Santa Rosa.
Well, the prices in this economy and the price of the most essential ingredient of the meal i.e. the 'Naan' both the plain and the garlic naan is outrageous. The garlic naan was also burnt (overcooked). Who wants to pay more than $3.00 for one naan (similar to pita bread.
Walked in to the sizzling tandoor today, 12/10/09, and proceeded to their luncheon buffet. I was underwhelmed. The most meager selection of any Indian lunch buffet on the planet. 2 chicken entrees, rice, vegetables, potatoes and black lentils. You have got to be kidding. What a joke. I walked out. I don't know if the food is any good and I'm not going to find out. I didn't even ask the price. All I can say is these people have a lot of nerve to pretend that this is a lunch buffet. I've seen more selection at a wake.
