My husband and I were weekely visitors to Cafe Portofino, until Mrs. Belmonte left the kitchen, the food is still very good, but some of the dishes just are not the same. Service is fair, and the
wine list is still great. We will continue to dine there at least
every other month, and I would still recommend it to people from out of the area.
Many wines by the glass make this a nice spot for wine tasting downtown. The food is an adequate accompaniment, but there are many better places for Italian food! Service is good. Food tastes better after a few glasses of wine . . . and the list is extensive so have a designated driver :)
Seeing the 5 Star Rating, I was anticipating a top notch experience when I stopped in for lunch. As you step inside, the large BAR area made the restaurant tables seem like an afterthought. I chose a pleasant window table providing an entertaining montage of passersby. The bartender came around from behind the bar right away bringing menus & an extensive wines-by-the-glass list. At her recommendation, I ordered the Mixed greens topped with grilled Tombo Tuna & giant capers, tomatoes, cucumbers & vinaigrette. My friend ordered the caesar & a pasta dish. As we were the only diners, our salads arrived quickly. The greens in my salad seemed fresh, but the tuna was rubbery and tasteless - despite having been ordered rare. There was no flavor of charcoal or signs of searing, apparently having been cooked at too low a temperature? My friend's caesar salad, which was much better, was topped with shaved cheese & flavorful anchovies. My friend also ordered the linguine seafood special. The linguine appeared homemade & looked delicious, but alas, was overcooked & mushy. The sauce seemed fresh, but lacked any special punch of flavor. The server hadn't brought a beer menu, which we requested and found on it a list of appetizers that hadn't been on the main menu we'd been given earlier. We'd have tried one or two of the appetizers, had we seen this menu before ordering. Although I wasn't drinking wine, I did like the extensive list of wines by the glass, although it would be nice if they offered smaller pours, so more could be sampled. I hope the regular chef was away - otherwise, I can't imagine the restaurant can thrive. Perhaps the bar supports the restaurant - as is often the case . . .
I highly recomend the salmon. Ohhh it is soooo good. It is kind of classy, but not too fancy. the service was excellent, and the atmosphere is just right. It is the perfect spot for a date. Two thumbs up, and a couple of toes. i like this place.
From the time you walk in the door until you walk out, you feel like you are eating with an Italian Family. The food is exquisite and the service, impeccable! There is a waiter that bellows out into italian songs while serving customers. What a wonderful experience with good quality food. I have driven an hour and fifteen minutes from my house just to eat at Portofinos.
My husband and I stumbled upon this restaurant on a trip to Santa Rosa for a concert. We were very impressed. The food was fantastic and the service was excellent! I just wish I didn't live so far away from Santa Rosa so I can visit this restaurant more often!
