The food at Thai Star is absolutely wonderful. Everything I have tried has been no less that delicious - from the spring rolls to the various curries to the Tom Ka soup to the fried calamari, nothing has even remotely disappointed me. Indeed, I drive from Modesto to Merced to eat at Thai Star. Though the Thai restaurant on the corner of Standiford and Tully in Modesto is good, it simply does not compare to the quality and flavor of the cuisine at Thai Star. Admittedly, the ambience is a bit lacking, but the food definitely makes up for that.
I went in expecting traditional spring rolls, with pieces of chicken and bean sprouts. When I walked out, I had the most wonderful experience of new spring rolls, they had bean sprouts, egg, tofu, and cucumber. On top of them were minced onions with shredded cabbage. The sauce included was wonderful - a flavor of jallapeno and thick soy sauce. It was my first experience there, but it left me wanting more.
Located in an all-but-forgotten strip mall off of G St. At first glance Thai Star might seem like a bad idea but take my word- the food is authentic and the proprietor's are dedicated to good service. The menu has the usual suspects- pad thai, spring rolls, chicken satay. Mango w/sticky rice is available seasonally.
