I grew up in Atwater and we LOVE Tary's. Whenever I visit my folks, we always get Tary's at least once. My favorite: Hamburger and Onion with extra cheese. As a kid, I loved watching Tary toss the dough. His son still does it himself to this day. They have never changed the order process... still a tablet in the window opening to the counter where the waitress writes the order. Through that same opening, he'd hand us kids pepperoni. Yes, it's an old place. Yes, his tableware and barware is ancient. That's all part of the charm of the place. Get the antipasta and a pizza. I've tried a few of the pasta dishes (years ago) but they just don't measure up to the pizza. The staff is friendly and helpful and it's still fun to watch the pizza guys toss the dough. Would love to have a class reunion there! :-)
The best pizza anywhere. The only other pizza close to this is Pizza Jack's in San Jose. Some constructive criticism. Tary really needs to upgrade a few things. Get some decent wine glasses! Those tiny glasses do nothing for the wine and you would think an Italian Restaurant would know better. Also, how about some flatware that doesn't dig into your fingers when you try to cut something, get some nice, smooth forks and knives. What about upgrading all your bar ware? REally, a Long Island Iced Tea is served in a beer mug? Tacky. One last thing, How about some nice pint glasses instead of those crappy heavy old beer mugs. Love Tary's they just need to put some $$ back into the restaurant.
The best pizza in the world. I have not been able to find a pizza that compares to Tary's....I can't wait until I can go out to Atwater to get a Garbage Pail Pizza. It is worth the drive from Missouri..
In October of 1976, my parents bought their first house. All my sister's and my friends helped to move our stuff from base housing to the new house. So Dad wanted to feed us all, and we got Tary's. We had 4or 5 large pizzas, an incredible feast! Makes me hungry, thinking about it.
The best pizza!
I lived down the street from Tary's Pizzeria in the late 60's and through the 70's. I ate so much of Tary's pizza that when I got congestive heart failure I thought my artieries were clogged from all the pizza I ate. Well my CHF was from a virus and not from clogged arteries. Actually my arteries were 85% clear. Tary is the best pizza in the world. I've been all over this country in the last 30 years and no one can come close to Tary's Pizza. I took all my friends there and they took their friends there.
When ever I get together with some of my old friends we always talk about the pizza at Tary's. It is unbelievable tasty and no one else can compare. In the late 60's there was Mom's Spagetti House and Benedetto's pizza by the Do-Bar donut shop. They were also good but Tary's always won out. I hope that Domenico and his sister Sonia are doing good.
Domenico was a great classmate, as well as a fine business man. His father taught him well. I'm proud to read about this great pizzaria online and know I've eat'n here and still think it's the best I've had in 35 years, barr none, ever. JohnnyP Seattle Wa.
I was born at the old Castle Air Force Base and only spent a few years in Atwater until we moved...Tary's Pizza was one of my fondest memories of Atwater...
Hand tossed dough, the family unit working together, the warm way your greeted and treated, like your part the family...I even remember Tary letting me toss the dough...I recently moved back to Atwater and will make Tary's a memory for my family...
