Govea's (pronounced GO-vay-ah's) was the brain child of owners Sara and Pedro Govea. Their dream was to create a family owned establishment that catered to the community around them. They wanted to make sure that Govea's became a favored eatery for all families, groups, and simply any patron with a craving on his or her lunch break! Since 1989, they have been serving San Jose with fresh and authentic Mexican dishes.
This is the most delicous real mexican food i have tasted. Ive been a loyal customer for over a year. I moved about 20 minutes away and every chance i get i make my way to goveas. They have very good customer service. What i recommend is yhe steak a la mexicana. Thia is an excellent restaurant, you wont be dissapointed.
Everyone with a negative reveiw probably loves the taste of Una Mas or Burrito factory (American food). This restaurant is one of the best around and they wouldnt be in business this long if the food wasnt good. And whoever said that you cant make food out of a strip mall is probably a Taco Bell eater. I do not work for the store but been a satisfied customer for as long as I could remember(17 years). When I ask my family if they want MEXICAN food they scream out GOVEAS not Una Mas or Taco Bell.
The food was lackluster and flavorless.. the prices were exhorbant... the service was crummy (except for the cashier).. I went here after seeing all the good ratings and I cannot see why it was rated so high. Go elsewhere
I lived close to Goveas several years ago and now I have to drive 30 minutes across town for a fix of their food. I have no comments about their service because I dont go their for the service. The food is fantastic. I wish I could suggest alot of different dishes. If you have a choice between the Chille Colorado and the Chicken (both good) get the Chille Colorado. It is the best I have had anywhere. The Goveas Burito Supreme (chille colorado) is the Best Burrito in the valley!
We have been going to Goveas for years. My son calls it the Beans and rice store. The people there are amazing especially MARIA who calls us by name when we get there, and the food is soo good that you crave the Govea Burrito Supreme every couple of weeks. The best Mexican in town by far!! If only they would open more resturants or maybe move into a little better area I think we would be there every week.
The prices are great, the service is polite and quick, the food is delicious. It is a small restaurant located on tully by partycity and foodmax (next to the corner starbucks). You get complimentary chips and salsa (mild and spicy). You can see your food being made. Burrito is huge!
I would have to wait for daily specials at other Mexican restaurants for tacos, or chimis. However, here I can get it any day I want for almost the same price ( with 10-15 cents difference). The water tasted refreshing.
The only small problem about this place is the amount of space they have. I understand that it is in a small facility, so spaces are limited to eat there (the amount of tables they have). But when I went I did not have to wait at all, so I was glad about that.
This tiny hole-in the wall is gem, a diamond in the rough. It seems to be a family run place, run by a woman who knows her business. The staff is friendly and prompt, the food is great and prices are more than reasonable. If memory serves me, I think we have been going there for twenty years. Can it be that long?
Some favorite dishes:
Chile Verde. Sublime dinner and excellent in burritos. The pork is simmered to a heavenly state with no trace of fatty gunk.
Carne Asada: I have it in soft tacos, ala carte with a side salad if I want to stick to my diet.
The Machaca dinner is one of my faves, simmered with onions and peppers, swimming in a rich tomato-y stew.
The Caldos will evoke memories of childood with mamacitas and all the tias getting together to cook up a feast for all the primos and the rest of the familia. I've heard non-Mexicans tell me the same thing!
Kids and kids-at-heart will love the hot chocolate, served in tiny tin carafes. Order this, first thing. They don't keep a big urn of this stuff going. They take time to steep it in cinnamon (just like my mom did) and takes a few minutes to prepare.
Govea's also serves breakfast, and serves beans rice and tortillas instead of the usual hash browns and toast. Pancakes too!
The kitchen is right out front, behind a glass shield, so they have nothing to hide. I like to sit at one of the small tables next to it so I can watch the magic happen. Mexican families eat here and so do the cops. For parties, at home, we order quarts of chile verde, beans and rice to take home.
