Theo's Restaurant, Soquel

Dined at Theo's this last weekend with my fiancee. The ambiance is very relaxing in a cute house that has been turned to a very nice restaurant. The rest of the experience didn't hold though. The service was not special. I had the lamb which didn't carry much flavor, and my fiancee had the filet and shrimp which was dry and just wasn't the best cut of meat. I guess this is a good place if you don't want to drive into Santa Cruz, but not a place I would ever refer.

Our first 3 experiences at Theo's were fantastic, and find it to be a wonderful value. Dined there 2/25. The salad was fresh and fantastic as always, the Fois Gras shear Heaven, Our main course a disaster. My wife and I both had lamb; mine ordred, med rare ( I even like it on there side) came raw and tasteless, hers orderd med came well done and tasteless. The entree was to come with a chili jam which was non existant and pommes gratin had no flavor. This usually is a great place to eat, the best in Santa Cruz, Dont let it slip guys.

Theo's is the place I would always choose for my birthday and for Thanksgiving, that sort of thing, when I lived closeby, and it never disappointed. The food is impeccable, the menu changes to accomodate local items, and the wine list is spectacular. Theo's is hidden away on Main Street in Soquel. Their website presents their menu, and it is the sort of menu that accomodates only a few items, i.e. 10-16, all precisely executed. Inside, it is similar to sitting in someone's house. The restaurant is cozy, and the food and wine are great. It is well worth the drive. 4.2.

This converted bungalow is charming and the perfect dining experience if you're not on a budget. The service was top notch without being pretentious. We made reservations for 8, which was when they close, but arrived early and the chef surprised us with glasses of wine to show his appreciation.

Theo's is THE place to go in Santa Cruz county for an elegant, special-experience meal. We had the 7-course chef's tasting menu and my god was it exquisite (see the menu on their site for details). The chef's tasting menu includes most of the main items from their regular menu in smaller portions, plus a few very special additions. Quiet, nicely-decorated small rooms in converted bungalow, and the service a great balance between too much and too little. Wonderful wine and leisurely pace. It was our 25th wedding anniversary and they provided us with a special dessert as well. We will be back, as often as we can afford it.
