Tsugaru Japanese Restaurant

Description

The sushi and sashimi at Tsugaru Japanese Restaurant are excellent, and the staff is very friendly as well as efficient. You can order directly at the sushi bar or relax amidst lush plants and elegant bamboo room dividers. All the broiled fish dinners are quite tasty and are reasonably priced. You can also choose from many donburi dishes. The atmosphere is casual, though it can be somewhat loud, especially weekend evenings.

Good Teriyaki Dishes
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/15/10
I have gone here a few times at lunch time and the restaurant can fill up very quickly. I don't eat sushi, but I love the Bento boxes. Teriyaki chicken, and teriyaki pork ribs, are both delicious. The service is very quick, and prices are reasonable.

A great homestyle meal with excellent service. Be welcomed and treated to an extensive sushi menu. We have been coming here for years and enjoyed the delicious selections and service. Do yourself a favor and give Japantown's best restaurant a try.

This is by far my favorite restaurant. I've been going there since I was a kid. Now I get to take my daughter there. All these years and not once have I been disappointed. There food is consistently great as well as there staff.

Some of the best sushi in San Jose's Japantown
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/26/07
Often very busy during the lunch hour, this long-time favorite is also open for dinner. In addition to consistently fresh and flavorful sushi and sashimi, they have a wide range of other dishes available. Their salmon teriyaki is always a favorite, along with their udon noodle bowls. The service is always prompt, and the staff is extremely friendly. Great for take-out too!

sashimi good others not
By No one, 5/8/07
As a Japanese from Japan, Tsugaru provides relatively good sashimi (perhaps sushi too), but not many varieties of fish available. Their other stuff are mostly disappointing. Tempura is relatively good. Their fried chicken is awful: don't order it. Bento box is perhaps the most reasonable thing to do there. It needs a bit more sophistication and more varieties of fish, and better cooking skills other than sashimi and sushi. It has a good ambience looking more authentically Japanese restaurant (use of good wood beams and paper screens, etc) like those in Japan. Tsugaru is the name of the northern eastern part of Japan, but the restaurant's menu or the ambience doesn't reflect the regional taste at all. Just another generic Japanese restaurant in this country, but with fewer entrees to choose. If you still okay with it, go.

The food is WHOLESOME!
By New Beginnings, 2/6/07
The owner goes above and beyond to make sure I am satisfied with my meal. I met him back from another establishment. I used to drive all the way to Evergreen to get a bite. It's a blessing to have him in JapanTown. I love the food. Especially, He prepares dishes that are not on the menu. You have to taste it for yourself. Enjoy

friendly authentic Japanese family place
By Erika and T, 10/1/06
We had Saturday lunch today at Tsugaru, soon as we walked in, the waitress greeted us and smiled and waved at my 16 month-old son. They made us very comfortable and even brought a tiny miso soup for my son. The staff are very friendly and attentive, the food is excellent. I ordered the chicken teriyaki, shrimp tempura, sashimi lunch box, lots of food! 2 big shrimp, broccoli, yam, and carrots. My wife had the sushi special, wow, big cuts of fish. Try this authentic Japanese family friendly place.

Truly Legit Japanese
By Natalie, 7/17/06
I have been eating at Tsugaru for about 10 years. The first time I went there I was disappointed that there was no huge sushi bar, but when I got my food I never gave it another thought. Their fish is so fresh, the servers are so polite and the experience is that of a local place that really cares about quality. Try the tofu salad for something really low-cal and fresh to go with your sushi. People who are "first-timers" or not adventurous will like the chicken or beef donburi bowls. Definitely the best of Japantown.

The best Salmon and Spicy Tuna
By Shabbizzle, 6/6/06
I go to Tsugaru 2 to 3 times a week, for the past 7 months. For the money, you will be hard-pressed to find better quality of sushi. My personal favorite is Salmon Nigiri and (extra spicy) Spicy Tuna Roll. I order a bottle of Ponzu Sauce, which I then substitue for Soy Sauce, and mix my wasabi with it. (has a nice citrus zing to it) The flavor is AMAZING. $2.00 for EACH piece of nigiri sushi is an amazing bargain for the cut you will get. The menu is very modest, but the little they do - they do it right! The place is very clean.
