El Amigo is still there, in business when others have closed down. It's food is consistent in taste, in quality and the atmosphere there is always upbeat and friendly. I also gave the restaurant 4 stars because the chips they serve are greasy, flaky and stale like the reviewer below me stated. The meats are well seasoned, they have a tinge of lime / chili flavor for a zing, though hardly enough to overpower the entire meal. The rice is cooked perfectly, and I can taste that its cooked in chicken broth and has a hint of saffron in it - pretty fancy. They also serve large portions of everything. They over-stuff your burritos and tacos which makes it messy but you know that every bite means you'll get a nice chunk of flavorful meat in it.

The food is great, service is great, but the stale store bought chips suck!!! I ask for a side of fried tortillas cut in triangles so I have solved the chip delema although it costs me extra for the side. Last time when I was leaving I noticed they had made a big batch of chips that I had ordered and they were on the counter in the back and the employees were enjoying them too!!!

Excellent food. Very Expensive however the consistency is always there. One of the few chili salsa's that actually have a kick. The service is generally good top excellent but have had bad service a few times. I give them a three out of five because I just can't see paying $20 a person for peasant food.

Very Uncomforting
By Al Lumpkins, 3/9/07
My teenage son and I were passing through Santa Clara last Sunday on our way to Palo Alto. We stopped in El Amigo for a taste of Mexican Cusine. From the time we entered the establishment , we were met by unwelcome stares from the patrons seated. We were then welcomed in by the assumed manager, and quickly ushered to the back of the resturant and seated at a table out of the way and sight of the rest of the patrons. My son and I made an assesment of the situation, determined that our presence was not welcomed, being that there were available tables in the front part of the resturant and we were the ONLY patrons seated in the rear out of sight. We immediately left the resturant with a bad taste in our mouths. We were confident that we would be able to find somewhere else to eat.

It was ok
By anonymous, 12/14/06
I have been here a couple of times, but the most recent time I went I had to wait 40 mins. for my food. I know that they usually bring out the food right away, but I guess it was that day that they were really slow. The food was ok. I have tasted better food at other mexican restaurants.

By Pattie Q, 3/9/06
If you are sick with a cold or the flu, please try this soup! Even if you're not, it's still really good. Takes 20 minutes to prepare, but worth ever second of it!
