Shogun Japanese Restaurant, Santa Cruz

Had not been here in quite a while and my memories of this place were good but not this time. There were 4 of us on the 12/24/09. The maguro sashimi was horrible - very fishy smelling and tasting. Not sure what happened. I felt strongly about sending it back but unfortunately my dining pals were feeling quite forgiving on this day. Not sure when and if I will go back. It would have been quite obvious to the chef that the fish was quite bad and old yet they still served it - not good at all.

It's clean and the service is good. But they don't even use sushi rice to make their sushi. Using a different rice completely changes the flavor and texture of sushi, and it's not for the better. So if you want real sushi, definitely look elsewhere!

The best in Santa Cruz by far. Don't try Mobo or Takara. You will be disappointed.

Excellent Sushi for true Sushi lovers. They don't californicate their stuff. Its authentic an its awesome.

The food just tasted soo good. Shirmp tempura and the sushi were GREAT. Even the atmosphere was great. I felt like i was at a really fancy resturant, but with out the $300 bill. You do get what you pay for. They give you a lot of food compared to other japanese places. TWO THUMBS UP SHOGUN! KEEP IT UP! You guys make Downtown Santa Cruz SHINE!

Hi everyone. Im from Atlanta, GA and i visted shogun because my friends were telling me about the best sushi ever. I was a chief for a euro resturant. The service and food were awsome. The give u so much food!!! Everyone there always greets you with a happy HELLO! I could totally tell that the oil there were using was CLEAN. Even there sushi tasted fresh. Everytime I go to california.. .even if im in san francisco i still drive to get some shogun sushi. OMG im gettin hungry just typin this...

A no-nonsence real sushi restaurant. The best in the area!

From beginning to end our service was terrible, our shrimp wasn't cleaned (deveined) and the attitude from the hostess, server and owner was poor in spite of my attempt to be polite. Look elsewhere for a better experience.
