There are all sorts of fusion cuisines going on these days but none quite like what you will find here at this unassuming little family-run restaurant. The food is Indian. Not a region of India, but a little of every kind of regional cooking from that subcontinent. But the fusion does not end there. The menu includes whatever strikes the fancy of the owners, so next to the Vegetable Samosas you'll find Spinach Ravioli and a specialty of the house, a Punjabi Tostada. It all tastes great, especially with the house-made Chutney and Tamarind Sauce. The chat from the family that cooks and serves is engaging and so are the crowds that include locals, tourists and retirees.
If you like Indian food with a twist, and you like your food fresh and home cooked tasting, this is the place for you. There are some 'mexican' fusion elements such as Lamb Pumpkin Enchaladas which are truly Indian tasting but so tasty. The atmosphere is cozy and homey but not low rent. It's very comfortable and the service is always excellent. This is a great neighborhood restaurant as well as a must visit for tourists and travellers. There isn't any other restaurant with a food selection quite like Avatar's.
The chef at Avatar's operates on a different plane. He's the Einstein (or Ramanujan) of Indian fusion cuisine.
My friend and I simply could not believe the food. And we've dined at the best places in SF, Berkely, Chicago, Manhattan, Vancouver--to name but a few.
The owner may well be your waiter. He's an extremely nice man. He and the other waiters provide excellent service.
Were prices doubled, your meal would still be reasonably priced.
This has been one of my favorite restaurants for years. I discovered it in 1999 while working as a consultant nearby. Now I never miss an opportunity to stop by. The food is inventive, skillfully prepared and exceptionally tasty. This is the kind of food you dream about. I especially love the curried lamb enchiladas. Who ever heard of such a thing? Never mind, they are delicious! They also prepare seafood in ways you have probably never tasted elsewhere. If you like Indian food, you will love Avatar's.
We were traveling from Austin and did not have information about Avatar's aside from the Internet. So, we were hoping the excellent reviews were right. We agree- Avatar's has fabulous service, unique food, and an ambience hard to beat. The vegetarian selections were diverse, but there are non-vegetarian options as well. We highly recommend dessert as well as trying the Himalayan beer. There are lots of local wines to choose from. We wish we had an Avatar's in Austin! Thank you Avatar's!
Lovely, delicious, healhty dishes cooked with love and served with grace. If you like good homecooking and friendly service, this is the place for you. Lots of excellent choices on menu for vegetarians.
Service is cheerful and customer focused. The server will ask you what you like, make suggestions based on your preferences and create a dish just for you. They are actually thrilled when you have special requests! Fresh seafood, delicious lamb,Indian style enchiladas, flavorful sauces and chutney. Great, flavorful meal for an excellent price.
The pumpkin chicken enchiladas at Avatar's is simply my most favorite dish in the entire world. We sometimes drive the 2 hour round trip just to have this dish. It is a mix of Indian and some otherworldly flavors that are totally unique.
