Chef Tom Thongnopneua is French trained, hence the gallic touches that sometimes show up in his interpretation of classic Thai cuisine, particularly in some of the grilled specialties that feature daube sauces. As befits the former chef at Le Central in San Francisco, the food at Orchid is meticulously prepared and delicious, from the satays to the Phad Thai noodles that are nowhere more flavorful than here. The decor is more French in the Asian set up, with lace curtains and polished wood, and the service is equally refined. The space is tiny, making it crowded with locals and people trekking north to enjoy the fine food the chef dishes out.
