This may look like a hacienda from California's colonial past, but it is actually an unfussy, elegant place to get delicious Mexican food a la Marin. You will find classic Mexican favorites with Nouvelle Cuisine twist. Chile Rellenos comes with a cream sauce kissed with cinnamon. The grilled chicken salad is topped with a creamy cilantro sauce that complements the crunchy jicama. The service is as gracious as you'd find at a hacienda. It is popular with locals and tourists, especially on weekends when reservations become de riguer .
The food here is not your typical enchiladas and tacos place; it's a bit more creative, authentic, and fresh tasting. Great salsa and margaritas, and the service is always friendly and efficient. One of our favorite restaurants in Marin, and our favorite Mexican restauratn in the Bay Area.
We've been eating at Las Camelias since the late 80's at least 1/year. It is my wife's favorite, guacamole cheese enchiladas, and my favorite, shrimp burrito dinner plate.
Low frequency visits is because we live in southern Cal and stop by there each time before arriving to Healdsburg, CA.
However, prior to 1997, we visited Las Camelias at least 5X year from Healdsburg.
Very authentic, high quality food and ingredients. Coming from a person who used to live in Mexico, in my opinion, it is the best Mexican restaurant in California.
Having grown up in a big American city, livd in California for nearly 30 years and travelled throughout Central America - I have eaten a LOT of Mexican food. And, in truth, I never really cared much for it. I tolerated it. It was pretty much the same everywhere - both below and above the Rio Grande. Until, that is, I walked into Las Camelias! The service and ambience are quite nice - but the truly outstanding feature is the food itself! The owner/chef starts with his mother's recipes from Mexico and he builds a menu around them that is made up of truly delicious dishes - each would hold it's own with the best cuisine of any country or culture. My personal favorites include the Arroz Mexicano, a mountain of rice, seafood and chicken dressed with four dirrerent sauces and the Enchilada con Camerones - an outstanding seafood dish. The beans are white - the service is friendly and attentive - and the atmosphere is warm and inviting.
