Oh My God...
I've been meaning to try this place out ever since I moved to the Bay Area a year ago. Everyone I know say the same thing... Nicole, you've gotta go to Gypsy's.
So I finally bit the bullet and checked it out. It was hard to find at first (It's tucked away in a restaurant Alcove along with a Korean BBQ, Quickly's and a few other places), and once I got there it was extremely crowded.
So I checked out their menu. Like any italian restaurant, it was filled with pasta dishes of varieties. Penne, Angel Hair, Fettuccini... you name it, it was there. Meat, Vegetable, Seafood...and Calzones that looked HUGE.
After mulling it over, I finally decided on the Frutti di Mara, which is Calamari, Mussels, Clams and Shrimp in a tomato sauce and Angel Hair pasta.
Food didn't take long to prepare, and the portions were extremely large. Not only that, but the mussels were large and meaty, which is rare for what you're paying.
It wasn't even a situation of quantity over quality. This stuff tastes like something Mom would make....that is, if your mother is great at making Italian food. I'm not good at describing tastes but it all balanced out well...and tasted so good that even 8 hours later, right now, I'm dreaming about having another plateful.
And imagine, all for less than 9 bucks.
Ladies and gentlemen, if you are in the Berkeley area and you want delicious italian food, look no farther than Gypsies. Trust me, it's worth your 9 bucks. And then some.
