Bette's Ocean View Diner
The name's a bit misleading. Not only is there no ocean view, but this is not your ordinary diner. Though it has streamlined aluminum and black-and-white tile, and the fare is inspired by diner cuisine, the ingredients are the freshest available and the dishes are prepared with care and imagination. At breakfast, the cooks do wonderful things with the humble buttermilk pancake, and the scrambled eggs and tortilla chips are memorable, as well. At lunch, it is sandwiches and plate specials, which often feature a fresh fish filet. The to-go counter next door, offers sandwiches and mini-pizzas.
I have frequented Bette's on several occasions and have always been extremely pleased by its food and ambiance. It is reminiscent of a 50s diner, replete with a professional staff (and 45 jukebox).
My latest culinary delight consisted of pancakes with a side order of eggs. Friends had omelettes and side orders. The coffee was piping hot and fresh.
One important note for patrons is that the place can become quite noisy and busy. The waiting time to obtain a table has been up to an hour and a half. So get there early, or be prepared to wait (particularly on weekends).
This place has excellent pancakes and I cannot wait to go back and try them one more time - especially the buttermilk pancakes - the chorizo with eggs is also magnificent! Be prepared to wait at least 30 minutes on a busy day.
Next to Oliveto's this is the most overrated restaurant in the Bay Area. At least it's not so expensive as that College Avenue pretender. Bette's was located on 4th Street when very little else was there; like its neighbor, Spengler's, it has a reputation that has far exceeded its measure. The food is average, the wait is long and the only plus is the Diner ambiance. Try across the street; there are several good restaurants in the area with more extensive menus.
If breakfast is what you must have and there's no great wait, Bette's is fine. Just don't believe everything you might read about the place and you won't be disappointed.
