Bette's Ocean View Diner
The name's a bit misleading. Not only is there no ocean view, but this is not your ordinary diner. Though it has streamlined aluminum and black-and-white tile, and the fare is inspired by diner cuisine, the ingredients are the freshest available and the dishes are prepared with care and imagination. At breakfast, the cooks do wonderful things with the humble buttermilk pancake, and the scrambled eggs and tortilla chips are memorable, as well. At lunch, it is sandwiches and plate specials, which often feature a fresh fish filet. The to-go counter next door, offers sandwiches and mini-pizzas.
I've eaten at Bette's a few times now and it's fast becoming a favorite. The 50's style diner is quaint, but even better is the fact that the food can back it up. Going around brunchtime usually means a 20-30 minute wait but since it's in the middle of a nice walkable shopping area, there's plenty to be distracted by while you wait. The omelettes here are awesome - be sure to try it out if you're ever shopping on 4th Street or hanging out in Berkeley.
Enjoyed a lovely breakfast with my brother, who put himself through NYU working tables in Manhattan; Cafe' Boulud (sp?), Mesa, and he throught the food was fine but whats with the service? The short-order cook on duty could work anywhere but the service...cripes.
And they got the check wrong! Never apologized, most places comp it but...come on, its breakfast, which only tells patrons that the help is just passing through.
