Description

This restaurant brings back memories of those grand Chinese restaurants from yore. The kind where you walk in and find a water pond and wild foliage to one side, dark wood walls to another, well worn red booths, golden dragons observing you as you dine and waiters in smart red vests with embroidery. Not many of these gems left, for those who consider them gems. Enjoy Northern Chinese and Mandarin cuisine here. Entrees include Bean Curd Beef, General Tsao's Chicken and Sea Cucumber with Pork, and Calamari with Black Bean Sauce. Many vegetarian selections are also available.

Mandarin Garden Restaurant is one of the best Chinese cuisine in Berkeley. They have free Delivery and they also give out free appetizers sometimes. THe food is prepared fresh and price is good. If you happen to eat out in berkeley try Mandarin restaurant, you will enjoy it.

Our family has been going to Mandarin Garden for over 20 years. The food is consistently delicious and the service unequalled. Wing is charming and thoughtful - an excellent host. The lemon chicken is very special as are the kung pao prawns and pea shoots. Everything we have ever ordered has been fresh and delicious. We drive down from Napa whenever we get hungry for our favorites. Try it!

This restaurant is awful!!! We tried the Peking Duck tonight. It was way too fatty and had no flavor. The other dishes (sliced fish, jelly fish with chicken, stir-fry long beans with minced pork) were also below average. The worst thing was, after we were done eating, we used the restroom facilities. Their Peking Ducks were hanging on rods from the ceiling at the end of the hallway, located just outside the restroom doors, and the grease from the ducks was dripping directly on to the floor where the kitchen staff was working. You just can't help seeing it as you entered/exited the restrooms. Yuk! If you want authentic Chinese food, go some place else -- stay away from this place!!

This restaurant has the absolutely the most delicious Peking duck! I say, visit the place for the duck itself. It's definitely worth driving a few miles for. They come with tortilla like wrapping paper instead of your typical bread - the skin is crispy and meat is juicy. In the bread, we put some hoisin sauce and cucumbers and green onions along with the meat/skin. The waiter was nice enough to give us a demonstration as well. The staff is very friendly and can speak Chinese, Japanese and English. Aside from the duck, we've had other items on the menu that were quite good. I really liked the pot stickers and they seem to have a specialty called stuffed eggplants that other restaurants don't seem to carry. The dessert was awesome too! We had some candied fried apple pears covered with sesame seeds. I'll definitely visit the restaurant again should I be in Berkeley.

Kung Pao prawns since the womb!

My family has been eating here for 27 years now. Wayne and Bob are like family members. Always great food, especially the kung pao prawns. Everyone I bring goes back on their own. A very special place.

The best Berkeley has to offer!

Wonderful food, wonderful service, wonderful people. What more can I say? I raised my son going to this place and even though he is now 19, they always remember him and ask how he's doing. Not only that, but they treat their return customers with SO MUCH kindness! I have never had a delivery that didn't include a little extra something at no charge. This is how a business should be run. They will forever have my undying loyalty and I pretty much refuse to eat at any other Berkeley Chinese food joint. I truly love this place and the people who work there. Go! You'll agree!

Mandarin Heaven at My Door

I've never visited Mandarin Garden actually. I was looking for a place near my apartment that delivered about a year ago... I found them in the Yellow Pages and just took a chance...believe me when I tell you that Mandarin Garden is the BEST Chinese cuisine that delivers in Berkeley PERIOD! They are pleasant over the phone; answering promptly, speaking clearly and politely, and they repeat the order and quote the exact price without being asked. When they say 30-40 mins., they mean it. Delivery is free, and EVERY TIME I order from them, I get free appetizers and deserts which vary (they like surprising me)... I couldn't believe it honestly. I'm always expecting something to be wrong with delivery orders, but Mandarin Garden is definitely on the money...the price is right, the food is steaming hot & fresh (and the food is soooo delicious, you're gonna wanna sample several items, so be prepared to drop at least $30 for two with hearty appetites). One of these days I'll have to actually go there and dine-in so I can get the full experience; and surprise the staff for a change!!....I'm sure it's worth it!
