Service and food are consistently excellent. The pies are to die for; the burgers as well. Spinach salad hits the spot. Wha'can'i'say? Check it out. You'll be back again and again. You'll be seeing Jack London (who graces the walls) in y'r dreams.
The breads are fresh, bakery on site. They make their own jam which is sitting in each table, olallieberry. The coffee is great and strong. I recommend the pumpkin pancakes. Service is quick. Only bad thing is that you will wait to be seated on Sundays after 10am, but it is worth the wait. Hamburguers are great too.
This is a very nice little restaurant that does particularly well at breakfasts and specializes in waffles. Their omlettes are also excellent and they make a breakfast special that is a good value. They also make terrific hamburgers the old fashioned midwestern way and both straight and seasoned curly fries. They have dinners of roast turkey, meatloaf and that old american fare done as well as one is likely to find outside of the best versions in S.F. at twice this price. They also specialize in pies and pasteries and these bring many folks in. Many folks meet here for coffee and political banter in the morning where beautifually crafted benches focus the crowd. Very nice staff.
Tuesday evening I bought a vanilla cupcake with chocolate icing. It was yummy. Saturday evening I bought another vanilla cupcake with chocolate icing. It was stale. I've been going to Fat Apple's for twenty years -- a lot at first, seldom now. The prices have gotten very high and the quality very uneven.
Fat Apples is a restaurant that is a fan favorite for the locals and will get packed on Sundays. Saturdays are quite different as you can be seated within minutes of arriving. The waiters are busy so the service is just average, but the food makes up for it. Their pumpkin pancakes are extremely well cooked and will definitely have me coming back again. The scrambled eggs and pastries were unfortunately just avereage though.
I would recommend this place if you have a hunger for panckes or waffles. Lunch is also served here. Most of of the tables seat 2-4 people so big groups may fee cramped.
